Just finished adding my new wheels. Got a set of six Koenig countersteer type x wrap in some kbro2s. I want to keep the spare I the stock location but I was thinking of plastidip for the rim to protect it while it’s under there.

Good idea? Bad idea? Better way to protect the spare?

If you bought a set of six, I’d ditch the donut altogether. I’m thinking about doing the same, myself. Mount two spares in the bed...

    cant hurt.

i coat mine with FluidFilm once a year, along with the rest of my chassis...doesnt do anything for rocks and road debris, but helps prevent rusting

I ditched the stock spare. I have a full set of six rims and five tires. Spare rim at home. Full spare under bed in stock location. I just want to protect it

Thanks. I feel like fluid film will leave it really messy should I need to use it. I was thinking I could dip it, then peel the dip when I use it. Dip whatever tire goes back under

It'll be grimey for sure.... But FF dries to a waxy coating....it doesn't stay dripping wet

You're crazy if you think you'll just quickly peel the dip off your rim. More than likely going to need alot of elbow grease and wd40/goo gone. If you're worried about your pretty spare don't put in under the bed in stock location. Get a tire carrier of some kind.

Not so much pretty as much as salt and road grime that I won’t be able to wash off as easily. I am being realistic with myself knowing that I won’t drop the spare just to wash it.

I don’t see why the dip would be so hard to peel off that I would need goo gone or anything else to get it off. Am I missing something? I had plastidip on a previous set of wheels and they took a little work but came off without too much work

Im confused. You're willing to drop the spare and take the plastidip off in an emergency situation? Or offroading?

In emergency I would leave plastidip on, mount as needed. Off-road I would leave spare in bed. Peel off after off-road done and use like normal, replace spare.

So you just want your spare to match the rest of the vehicle's wheels in case you need to swap in a emergency. Gotcha. Seems a little vain to me but your dough$. You have 6 of them. Strap one up underneath and keep one in the box at home in the garage. Who cares what it looks like if you have extra to replace? They are going to get screwed up anyways if you actually wheel.

I don’t feel like it’s vanity. I just like to keep and maintain my truck well and not put too much effort. It doesn’t seem like a lot of cost to me. $8 for a can of plastidip.

I do wheel, it got it first trail stripes and dents in the first 3 months of owning. I also wash and polish it regularly. I guess I am odd in that I will take a shiny truck, drive it, wheel it, bang it up, then wash it, polish and change out as needed. I am OCD when it comes to maintenance, I already change my oil before it due, not way early but always before. I regrease more often then recommended. But I feel like my vehicles last longer than others minus parts that I break. Side note, I have not broken anything yet and on the tacoma. I hope my discretion as a driver has gotten better over the years.

Get an old trash can lid (find on one the side of the road after a good windstorm) or get a new one from the hardware store and rig it to sit under your spare covering the rim up. Obviously if you wheel with it like the lid will get destroyed, but while you are on the road it should provide good coverage from the elements as well as rock chips.

My 04 highlander has a plastic encasement of the spare and tire. Mostly to look better from the rear by camoing the unit hanging down i expect.

Anyway, thats been very durable. Should be an easy junkyard find.
