I wonder if they do come with the turbo for the 3.5 engine, if you could buy the turbo kit for the existing ones 16-18+. Perhaps(?)

They are working on it. Development takes time. I'm savings my pennies, i expect something to be out in the next year.

The 2010 4runner/FJ S/C just came out over a year ago....

I seems weird to me this discussion. Like a turbo would be great and all, but isn’t killing the Atkinson cycle the first goal. Like, the goal of the Atkinson cycle is to leave the intake valves open longer than the time of the compression stroke, which reduces the energy required for the compression stroke as some of the fuel air mixture is pressed back into the intake manifold. If we are then ‘blowing in’ additional pressure with a turbo, are we not just fighting the pressure coming back into the intake from the delayed intake valve?

Rather than some huge engineering effort to turbo this engine, wouldn’t defeating the Atkinson cycle be a good first step, or us that actually not possible due to the mechanical design of the engine?

Essentially are we trying to undo the Atkinson effect with a turbo when what we really want is just no Atkinson??

    No.

Within a fraction of a second of putting your foot down, Atkinson is gone. Atkinson does NOT reduce max power at any rpm. Atkinson is only in effect under light throttle.

With respect to forced induction Atkinson, look up Miller cycle.

So is Atkinson only in effect at idle or coasting?

Pretty much yes once you lean into throttle it goes back to Otto cycle. That's why the trans hunts gears so much.

I don't see a supercharger let alone turbo on the horizon let alone a "kit". That's just delusional.
The 4banger can be turbo'd as several gen2 guys on here have done. Same engine with nearly indestructible block. And that will drive circles around the 3.5
Of course then you can't have the fancy TRD bling but I suppose it could be easily retrofitted

The 3.5 turbo currently in the new LS will go in the next gen TUNDRA, not Tacoma. Promise.

Agreed. Take Ford as a comparison: they now have six engine options in the F-150:

    1. 3.3 NA V6
    2. 5.0 NA V8
    3. Twin turbo 2.7 V6 Ecoboost
    4. Twin turbo 3.5 V6 Ecoboost
    5. Twin turbo high output 3.5 V6 Ecoboost (Raptor only)
    6. 3.0 turbo diesel

They can't put any of these in the upcoming Ranger, since there is a "law" in the auto industry that midsize trucks have to be less powerful than full-size trucks. My guess is that the regular Ranger will have two options: NA V6, or a turbo 4-cylinder. MAYBE the "Ranger Raptor" will get the 2.7 Ecoboost - which would be awesome - and because Ford knows how to create a "halo" brand that is a significant upgrade from the regular truck (Toyota should learn from this). If the Ranger Raptor came with the 2.7 Ecoboost and a stick (which it never will), I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

If we translate this to Toyota, a turbo 3.5 could be an option for the Tundra, but not the Tacoma. My guess is that if Toyota moves to Forced Induction for its trucks, they will put a turbo 4-cylinder in the Tacoma, and a turbo V6 in the Tundra, while keeping a NA V8 for the Tundra as an option, and a NA V6 for the Tacoma as an option. Just my guess.

But DOOD... If they had a turbo inline 4 banger and an NA v6, there's no point in even having two separate engines because the 4 banger will do everything the same, with better efficiency. No point in having a V6 at that point.

That being said, I can't wait for Mat to release more specs on the upcoming turbo kit for the Tacoma

A turbo 4 will not do what a N/A 6 can do reliably and last hundreds of thousands of miles. The 4 will need turbo replacements down the road and so on. The Ford eco boost. Makes good power. And everyone claims it’s the v8 Killer. The v6 eco boost. It has experienced turbo failures. Excess blow by. Timing chain failures. Yes it may tow slightly more but the v8 can do it effeceintly and last longer. Less moving parts.

Thats untrue. The Toyota 4 bangers, specifically the 2TR in the trucks, are a closed deck cast iron block with forged rods and crank.
Toyota > ford in engine reliability and maintenance, every time.
