The commute costs would be prohibitive!

    Correct!

Don't even need to go to the corner.

It's primarily that 2nd course, where it's adjacent to the fascia/roof, that I'm concerned about. But to do it right, it makes sense to clean most of it up. I've got a box of the shakes and that fiber breather board that goes under each course - from the window replacement projects I've done.

Tricky without removing more than you want. You want to try and slide them out from behind the fascia, then sliding the new ones behind the fascia. I like to keep siding an inch off the roof, letting the flashing do it’s thing. Not sure if that answers the question. :)

It’s been a good 20 years since I lived up north, and dealt with that style of building. You might want to post it in the home improvement thread to get a better answer.

I'm not sure if the shakes are tucked under the fascia or simply abutt it. The small section I'm confused about it right under your #1. Do I scribe that shake to the shape/contour of the fascia, drip edge area?

When you demo it you’ll find out if it was tucked or scribed, I don’t see an issue with scribing it. Hard to see on my phone. Some kick out flashing would prevent further water penetration.

Thanks Paul - I'm brain humping this too much. Just need get up there and demo and redo and make it as good as I can. If it's lasted this long, anything I do can only be better.

The inspector was there when I showed up, shocking! I like this inspector, we call him “by the book Carlos”.
We may not be able to do this job, looking into moving the powerline, cost, and if we can.
“Overhead powerlines at rear property line. Existing garage is very near rear property line. CANNOT change use of structure from garage to habitable space w/o A/E review and approval......DO NOT PROCEED.”
