What are these Fox shocks on my Taco?

I bought my Tacoma as the third or fourth owner and have a blown rear passenger shock as evident from the puddle of oil under the shock. I can’t identify what it is other than it has a Fox sticker on it. Called their service but went to voicemail. Will try again.

Also, I’m confused by the top mount being an eye instead of a stud as I read I might find elsewhere in similar threads. Did the previous owners modify this mount?

I plan to pull it off and check it’s compressed length ASAP. Thanks for your help!

That's one beefy ass shaft on that shock. Yes, the upper mount was modified. It's normally a stem mount.

Oh boy. That's not what I wanted to hear. Thanks for confirming it's modified. Any chance those Fox shocks themselves are stock as thick as they are?

You have a 2.0 air shock. Can be rebuildable but not really the right application for a leaf spring truck. IMO get the extended and compressed lengths and order a new standard 5/8 shaft 2.0 to replace them.

The PO do a lot of towing or max GVW loads?

Thanks TMFF. 5/8" shafts just give some performance upgrades over larger size shafts like mine? Maybe something like this you're suggesting, huh? :
    http://accutuneoffroad.com/product/fox-2-0-smoothie-shock-58-shaft-emulsion-8-travel

I do not know if the first two POs towed, but the owner I bought it from just used it as a daily driver. Wouldn't be out of the question, it had a worn center bearing on the driveshaft I just replaced (along with u-joints and a driveshaft balance) which solved a lot of my driveline vibe and kachunks when stopping starting.

It's worth checking again, but I did have most of the fluids replaced when I bought it a year ago. Then again, this was by a shop that didn't torque my brake caliper down, causing my caliper to shear the brake line on a nice forest service road at 10k feet. :bikewhoops:

You'll probably want something closer to the 10-12" travel range. From your posted measurements, the 8" shock would give you about an inch of down travel.

I should have been more clear; I will do the measurements, but I had just meant in terms of product lines. Thanks T6A1C9O! I'll get them off this weekend and measure.

Oh by the way, it looks like I have modified leaf springs as well which is where I understand my rear lift comes from. How do I measure how much lift I have above stock?

    Ahhh. In that case, yes.

To get the lift you'll want to measure from the center of the hub to the bottom of the fender. There are a bunch of posts on here with the average stock numbers (they all seem to vary a tiny bit, even from the factory).

BTW your rear springs look like they might be Deaver J66's.

Looks like people aren't a fan of Deaver J66 packs from some forum searching. Seems people find them to be too light, and the company implies it can't handle the same loads as stock. Can I ask you why you were wondering if the PO towed or drove max GVWR? I'm just trying to gel that idea with the idea that these springs aren't made to carry weight. I'd hate to need to swap out my leaf springs to get back to being able to tow, which I had hoped to do one day. My desired use case basically looks like this:
    Priorities:
1.) Off-road capable of handling forest roads and getting me out hunting in the west just a bit farther down the road than the average Joe (not looking to go wheeling)
    2.) Daily driver
3.) Typical loads working around the house
4.) Occasional towing down the road (within the bounds of the advertised trailer rating, so basically I don't want to sacrifice this to achieve 1 & 2)

Hope these leaf kits don't exclude 3 and 4. I'll try and get better pics when I get the wheels off this weekend.

Before removing an air shock, do you have to bleed out the air? Is it under compression when sitting on the ground? What about when jacked up? Not sure how to remove it and didn't see relevant search results.

I found some information that tells me yes, it is under compression and thank god I didn't try to remove it.... Welp... Looks like I'm redoing the whole rear suspension :crapstorm:
