3rd Gen Subwoofer Install - Well Worth It

What's up guys? I ended up having an audio shop make a custom subwoofer box and do a full install for me. I exhausted my search for trying to find a pre-fab unit I could drop in. Typically I do all this work myself but I've never made a custom box and I don't really have to tools easily accessible. The shop did a pretty good job, I was impressed with it. They did better than I expected. They ended up making a Y-Harness instead of splicing into the lines (Per my request). I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to car audio and wiring, I'm a stickler for the details and I can say these guys definitely met my expectations. They were even able to use one of the knock out's to add a bass knob.

Here's what I'm running

Subwoofer - Rocksford Fosgate Punch 10" P3S Shallow 2-Ohm DVC Subwoofer (P3SD2-10)
Amplifier - Rocksford Fosgate Power 500 Watt Class-bd Constant Power Amplifier (T500-1bdCP)
LOC - Rocksford Fosgate 2-Channel High-to-Low Converter (RF-HLC)

I can tell you I was a little skeptical at first of running a 300 watt RMS system. My previousl vehicle had a kicker solo-baric vented subwoofer and amp running at 750 watts RMS but I can tell you for being inside of a truck and the fact that it's a sealed box I am more than happy with it. It makes the entire cab shake with ease.

My future upgrade plans include replacing all of the door speakers and front tweeters but at this point I can't foresee myself doing a head unit upgrade. It pulls it to far away from the factory OEM look and I'm worried about loosing functionality. The amp I am running will also run an upgraded Rocksford Fosgate T1S2-10, which runs at 500 watts RMS @ 2 Ohms. I might do this in the future... just because I'm a bass junkie lol.

What do you guys think? Thoughts? Opinions?

 

I'm interested in doing something similar to this. just want a 10" sub, i used to have all sorts of stuff in the trunk of a car but now that i'm a little older just want the essentials. what did this set up end up costing you to have installed? I'm more or less thinking about going with the behind the seat taco tunes box in my 2018 3rd gen though

 

Good for you. A sub makes a huge sound difference. I went with the Fosgate 8” under-seat powered sub since there is very limited room in an access-cab, and I need to haul stuff in the back. The 8” sub fills the low-end, but lacks the big thump from a large enclosure.

Subaru tweeter upgrade .....
The loaded enclosure is nice bc it just drops in, no mods, no cutting, unplug and remove if I need the storage bin behind the rear seat

So all in all the price was $1500, that's audio equipment, cables, subwoofer box materials, subwoofer box assembly, and the overall install. Not going to lie, the price was pretty steep but I specifically wanted to use all of this equipment, I speced everything out myself. I know there are some cheaper options out there for sure, but this is custom to me so the price is worth it.

Here's what I would recommend for you guys looking to add subs. Find a shop that will build a wood box and have them build the box and install the sub & amp yourself. I probably could have saved $500 or so by doing it myself. Shop around too, I went to several shops before I settled on the one I went to. I had three shops insist it could only be done with fiberglass and wanted to charge $700-$900 for the box alone. You could also fabricate the box yourself. I didn't build the box by myself for two reasons, first I was desperate to get my bass back and I can get horribly impatient when I want something LOL also I don't have the space in my garage currently to do a project like this.. Second, I don't have access to the tools such as saws and I literally have zero experience any type of wood working. I'm sure given some time and money I could have managed to get it done but I didn't want to wait.

That looks awesome! Money well spent! I have a double cab and went with a JL Audio Stealthbox and love it. They have one for the Access cabs too. Did you consider it? I did, it didn't provide enough square footage for the types of bass I like to run. Especially for a sealed box. It's not a bad option at all, just wasn't suited for my taste. I'm going to upgrade the subwoofer later on and I will need 0.75sqft-1.25sqft. The box I had built measured up to just shy of 1sqft.

 

Adding a sub is definitely worth it. The stock audio system in these trucks is embarrassing...good thing new speakers and tweets really don't cost that much for a noticeable upgrade. Top that off with a powered subwoofer and you'll have an enjoyable audio experience! Glad you're happy with how it ended up, being in an access cab.

I have a IDQ10 being fed 500w rms in my double cab. Very happy with it.

 

The price was fair in my opinion. I had other shops quite much higher for a custom enclosure. I'm on vacation right now but when I get a chance I'll do a price break down on the receipt so you can get a better idea. If I remember right it the parts were more than $850.

 

@Technique that's my only regret with the access cab lol I couldn't find a pre tabbed box other than the JL, it eats up space in the back seat but my next project is adding some molle panels to help with that issue.

 

I like the console looks good. We have he same sub. I jut got lucky finding this box. I did the install. Only 250 watt amp I think. Bumps well.

 

@brodys16sr looks good, even 250w is a big upgrade from stock.

Does anyone have a similar install on a DC but mounts/installs on the left side (driver's side) of the back seat? I use the 60% side of it for storing and don't use the 40% side.

 

I always like a good system.. However. The Sub should have been faced down imo. Could have used the top of the box for an amrest or cup holders and kept your system more low profile and away from prying eyes Keeps the sun or debris from damaging the cone and surround also.

 

The issue with using the driver’s side will be available volume (cu ft) for the box. You can fit a sub in the space but even the low profile/shallow subs need more air than that space typically provides.

 

I looked at installing the sub on the left side. I never found a way to do it retaining the factory pocket. There wasn't enough air space. The only possible way would be removing that panel and building a box to replace it. I fibreglassed a box into the right side and put a shallow 10" sub there with the amp on the left side. I am very happy with the set up.

 

How about those bass shakers they had once upon a time? Does anyone still use them? Maybe just an 8" sub.
