Jeezuz! I dont see that as a regular occurrence, generally speaking the lower ones are really strong, I dont think I have seen many blow out like that, but it did tear/break at the weld joint which is a common failure point.
Takes quite a bit of force to break that part, or in some cases it can be a bad weld from the factory, not something that happens often but apparently not impossible!!

So yesterday while unloading a bunch of material (Rebar, forms, and large forms for making a key footing) getting ready for some more concrete I ended up droping a 20' 2x12 on my head, fell off the back of the truck while still holding it and almost broke my damn neck!! (All because the rack rear (removable) crossbar wasnt secured and I wasnt aware of that, in hindsight I should have checked it to make sure it had the pins in it and just assumed they were! I can blame myself for that one!)

I feel like I got hit by a truck today...the damn rear crossbar on the rack on the truck I was borrowing wasnt pinned in and came off while I had the board tipped up like a teeter totter and when I went to yank it backward while kicking off the bumper to slide it back, the bar fell off and I got augered into the ground with the full weight of the board on top of me! I was doing all this solo

I dont remember the impact, but do remember a brief moment when as I pulled there was a sudden lack of resistance and next thing I know I was on the ground under a 20" 2x12! My sunglasses were about 15 feet away, lol!

Today I have 2 big bumps on my head (top and back) almost separated my right shoulder and my shoulder blade hurts like hell as well as my complete R. shoulder. Also a bit concerning is that my neck makes cracking sounds when I turn it, as well as my back is what feels like a strain in a few obvious spots. I got some pretty wicked whiplash!!
It honestly feels like I had a wicked dirtbike getoff! I have felt similar after crashing in a race at 50+mph in the desert hitting a rock hiding in a bush and being ejected over the bars.

Next time I will check to make sure the truck I borrow (because it had a large rack) is not gonna try to kill me. Dang that coulda been waaay worse!

Glad you made it through that without worse injuries. You sure you don't want to get your neck checked out (x-rayed) by a doctor?
Are you going to be able to do your regular work right away or are you going to have some down time to recover?

 

Ill walk it off. I've had this same feeling before even with the crunching sounds in my neck, I will be taking it easy today and maybe tomorrow but I have a ton of stuff to do around the shop so Im gonna have to practice extra restraint, as I tend to try and always go full speed regardless of how I feel.
If after a couple days the neck feels bad I probably will, I can barely turn my head today and my shoulder feels like its on fire and I cant raise my R. arm over my head too well.

I think Ill be OK, just really sore, but as a Desert racer thats not an unusual feeling..as long as nothing permanently damaged or got broken I should be OK.
I landed on the shoulder that has artificial tendons in it so Im almost 100% sure it didnt separate because its been reinforced with a Kevlar replacement tendon! This is the 3rd substantial hit its taken since I had my shoulder rebuilt/fixed..if it had happened on my left side I am willing to bet it would have been worse!

Now I wish I had a video camera pointed right there so I could see it all go down since I dont remember the whole thing!

Dam Jason, glad you're back on your feet. Let us know if need any of us to help out. I'm sure you'll get some volunteers to do some basic labor for the new shop or anything else you might need over the weekends or when we're off work.

 

Hope all is well big guy! Take some days off from the retirement plan. Kick the feet up and rest. You owe it to yourself!

Just got back from the weekend speed run to Harpers Ferry, WV for the river fest. They've been getting hammered with rain. Normal level for this time of year is generally around 3-4' if you're lucky, we had just over 12' for our run. Good times for sure!

Thanks guys, got a really great bunch of people here! Im feeling a lot better now. And the neck is starting to feel semi normal again, glad Im a quick healer!! My ass is still sore, apparently landed on it too pretty hard, have a headache and neck strain from the whiplash is nearly gone (I had pain where the muscles attach behind my ears, lol.)

I really appreciate the support and offers to help me out, love ya guys (no homo)! Really awesome group we have here, thanks for that everybody, Its nice knowing people have your back if it ever comes to that!!

Hey SD peoples, the wife and I are heading down to Baja (Valle Guadalupe) next week and the wife is concerned about taking the new truck across the boarder. I told her that it wouldn't matter which car we take, they're both pretty nice (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe is our other vehicle). But she's specifically concerned about the Tacoma because trucks are pretty popular in Mexico. Any need for concern? We'll be taking the coast road down and staying in the valley and of course won't be driving around at night, especially after few wine tastings.
