Hey everyone, found this forum through a google search and glad I did. I purchased my dream truck, a 2018 Tacoma (TSS package black on black) yesterday, but as I drove home my gut sort of sank as I found it sluggish driving on the highway.

Don't get me wrong, I did test drive it extensively and told my salesperson my reservations about the smaller engine but was assured that for me... since it's a daily work driver and won't be towing anything, I'll be just fine. Also... I recently graduated college so I'm on that entry level salary which financially made more sense to opt for the v4.

I guess what I'm getting at is... does anyone else have and can attest even the new v4 Tacomas are great trucks? Did I indeed make a great purchase I can simply enjoy?

I don’t have experience with the 4 cylinder, but I know many members here are thrilled with theirs. I’m sure it will take a little getting used to. What are you used to driving?

It's all good. I drove a 4 cylinder until a few years ago. They are great motors, last forever, and cheap to maintain. You got a great truck and made a smart move not buying more than you can afford. Dude, you got a new truck! Enjoy it!

That's my biggest Hope's right there! That'd it just some readjusting I'd have to do.

Before this, I was driving an 04' Lexus es 330 which had a v6 haha. Lasted all high school and college for me, so maybe it's simply all those years on a 6 engine??

It’s an I4 btw but Toyota trucks with 4bangers is what started their legendary name for reliability. If you’re not towing anything, you made the right choice :)

A lexus is not a truck and a truck is not a lexus.

    It's an"I4" (inline four cylinder), not a V4...

Definitely going to take some adjusting. Coming from a sporty car to a slow truck. But it’s a great truck! They have proven to be incredibly reliable and great trucks overall. Enjoy it!

I have an I4 and I put a K&N cold air intake on it and now it’s louder and has about 7 more hp. When it kicks into overdrive it moves.

Enjoy your 4 cylinder. Its a bulletproof motor. Ive got 240k on mine and it still runs like new. If you need it to move, dont be afraid to put your foot in the gas and let it turn some revs. The 4 cylinders are very happy in the 3000+ rpm range

I said this also in the past here. Alex you have to re-think the certain expectations you have about your truck. That naturally-aspirated 4 cylinder under your hood has a world-class lineage that goes waaaay back in Toyota truck history. NO bugs. Tried and true. Bullet-proof. Reliable beyond anything out there. It's no nimble "car"; it is, instead, a pretty substantial "truck" that aint small buddy. And that engine will move that truck just fine for what it is and has been a regular engine put into Toyota trucks no matter how much bigger these trucks have grown. That's saying a lot about your engine, no?
Just get in that thing and enjoy the hell out of your smart purchase!

Yeah don't be afraid to wind that 2.7L out, just spent the weekend away exploring the mountains and it moves pretty good even up steep hills when you're up at 3500-4000rpm.

Doesn't please the ear like some engines but it'll get the job done.

Let me set your mind at ease. Your engine is based on the engine I have in my truck (same bottom end, different head design), an engine which at 245K miles survived a rollover was transplanted into a new truck, wheeled hard for a year and then supercharged at 260K. I frequently bounce it off the rev limiter, go slow speed wheeling and it sees plenty of boost. You don't have to worry about reliability. That's a good engine you got there.
