Hi all! New member and first thread here..

My wife and I are looking into getting a Toy hauler. Obviously, we are extremely limited on our options with the Tacoma.

We are looking at the Genesis Supreme 19SS. (GVWR is 8200lbs, Dry weight is 5220lbs, hitch weight 620lbs). As noted in my profile, I have a 2014 TRD Sport V6 4.0 5ft bed.

We wouldn't be putting any toys in there anytime soon, thus, the dry weight shouldn't increase much as I can always fill up water, gas and everything at the camp sight.

I'm just wondering if it would be possible and safe to tow this trailer (again, mostly dry) just until we get a larger vehicle later down the road to load up toys with, etc.

    Thanks all

Welcome aboard:hattip:. That is a lot of trailer for a taco:( by the time you add to it you will be maxed out on the tongue weight:eek:

As long as your toys are paper airplanes and helium balloons you'll be fine.

Thanks for the info all. I've decided to go with the Jayco Jay Feather 25BH. GVWR = 6,750. But, I'll never be going anywhere with full water tanks, etc. Decided toys can be hauled later on in life when funds are there. Taco should pull it fine.

I just need to look into some airbags now that will help the ride. Any suggestions for airbags?

I'd look at whatever airbags are equipped on a truck that should actually be towing that trailer, and then buy that truck. Or i'd buy a different trailer that my truck can tow.

You're overloaded the moment you hitch up with that combination. It's heavier than the first one you listed.

"Dry" advertised weight doesn't mean just not wet, eg water etc. It means absolutely bone stock, off the dealer floor without a single piece of extra tissue paper. If you left the dealer brochure in the trailer you have increased its dry weight. Unless you plan on taking an empty trailer camping, buying everything you'll be using at your campsite, and then abandoning it all when you leave, it's weight you need to factor in.

Your truck has a max tongue of 360/640/650 pounds depending on your configuration. That trailer without anything loaded in it is carrying 645lbs on the tongue. Hence being in all likelihood, over weighted immediately. At best assuming your truck is rated 650, anything you load into the trailer would have to be perfectly located to not affect it.

Your truck has a gcwr of 7500/8100/11,000 lbs, depending on configuration. Just the truck and trailer combined exceed 9000lbs, dry. That leaves you with either -1500, -900, or best case about 2000lbs for all fuel, liquids, passengers and cargo located in both truck and trailer. By the time your camper is loaded with the usual "essentials" there is not a lot of room left for anything else for things like gas, a driver or passengers in the truck.

Beyond weight, that trailer is 30 feet long and 10 feet tall. That is a really big lever. Do you plan on driving anywhere with wind? Or anywhere a semi might pass you? Ever try carrying a sheet of plywood on a day with a slight breeze? Physics, she is a bitch sometimes. While seeing the aftermath of turned over trailers was amusing, I always assumed actually being in the truck getting turned over would be much less so.

There are a LOT of people out there with the belief that tow ratings are completely arbitrarily set by the manufacturer. Which makes sooooooo much sense when you consider the absolutely massive amount of civil liability the same company tries to eliminate wherever possible. That's sarcasm BTW :) it's determined by a lot of testing and takes into consideration everything they can, including the tires they ship with. Yes there is a safety buffer built in, specifically because of people who like to say "...and I've never had a problem!".

As a tangent, in my last career I took a lot of stolen vehicle reports and a majority of stolen vehicles were driven off because the owner left the keys in the ignition with the doors unlocked. Not by accident but because universally, "I've been doing that for xxx years and I'VE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM." And I always got to respond "well, you can't say that anymore."

No one ever has a problem, until there's a problem. And then they sue. I can safely step off a 100 story building and will have absolutely no problems, for just over 99 stories.

Taco won’t pull it fine. That’s too much trailer for a small truck. With an empty trailer you're already at the max allowable tongue weight.

If you want a toyhauler you can pull with a Tacoma look at the Sportsman Classic 160 and 180.

Asked and answered his own question. That seems excessive, even for a 2nd Gen.

I am fairly new to towing travel trailers, so I will offer you some practical advice from last year's 8,000 mile trip with the Tacoma towing a Jayco Hummingbird (17 feet box, 20 ft with tongue, just over 3,000 pounds dry, 3,750 GVWR. The Hummingbird was well matched to the capacity of the Tacoma, but in the mountains and on windy days, it was working to pull the trailer. I wouldn't want much more trailer back there. I for sure wouldn't want to tow a trailer with the Taco that's approaching double the weight and 10 feet longer than the Bird. I suggest you try a test tow from the dealer you buy the trailer from before you sign on the dotted line.

There are bolt-on kits made for both 2WD and 4WD Tacos by "Ride Rite", which you can add yourself. You can get these on Amazon for about $320 for the complete kit. One really nice part: These do not disable the vehicle if you can't finish the install within your allotted time.

Update - thank you all for the input. I posted this a while back not knowing anything in regards to towing.. I have since researched extensively and know what the limits are for my truck.

Sorry for the novice questions and lack of knowledge.

    Thanks for the help!

On paper I'd say you're in the ok zone.
