Toyota sold some 2wd and 4 cylinder 4 runners in Canada up until about 10 years ago IIRC. EDIT: Sorry, third gens were the last to have 4 cylinders.
The amount of selection in the US is dizzying. I never knew that you could get a 2wd short bed dual cab short box Tacoma with the 4 cylinder, but they exist in the US.
I think the 4 cyl 4 runners for the current gen were only available in 2010 model year, and they made only a few of them.

As to the OP's question. As long as you have ground clearance and good tires, and ideally a locker (get one from a wreckers?) you'll be able to go a lot of places. I enjoyed my 2wd truck. I was always amazed at where it took me. Try it out!

Cut & broke off stuff. Prolific ziptie and tape usage.
Good tires and ratcheting cable puller and tow strap. That's what i carried in 2wd tacoma for years.
Have seen 2wd with locker do impressive trails.

Taller tires so you drag less stuff in ruts help a lot i think too.
