I’m taking a 2 week trip out to Arizona and Utah this July to check out the Grand Canyon and Zion areas as well as some other places along the way. As anyone else been out there before? What trails did you hit and where did you go?

North Rim has amazing places to camp, stop at North Rim Lodge for a walk around then check google maps for Crazy Jug which is where we camp and look out over the canyon.

We just returned to NC after five weeks of camping in northern AZ and southern UT - awesome area!!! We were at the North Rim over Memorial Day weekend and managed to avoid the crowds by driving out to Point Sublime https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?ll=36.22155574244767,-112.0540505091019&spn=0.221522,0.376968&hl=en&t=h&msa=0&z=16&source=embed&ie=UTF8&mid=1GCbNA0fvGvgkN4BdByrv8ayqdW8 The drive, 18 miles one way, was more bumpy than challenging but the view was amazing.

Notom-Bullfrog road, Burr Trail road, Cathedral Valley and others https://www.nps.gov/care/planyourvisit/roads.htm all afford great scenery

Hole in the Rock road https://www.nps.gov/glca/planyourvisit/driving-the-hole-in-the-rock-road.htm Plan for a full day on this one

Lee's Ferry is a nice little campground sitting above the Colorado River about twenty miles outside of Page off 89A and on the way to the North Rim. The fish tacos at Cliff Dwellers were unexpectedly good and the beer cold.

One of my top 5 favorite roads is near Kanab UT. Go 5 miles north of Kanab on 89 to Angel Cyn, (you can side stop at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary), go about a mile north on Angel Canyon then east (you can see it on Google maps). That comes out on Johnson Cyn. It's not the longest but there are a lot of smiles to be had.
On the north rim make sure to hit Toroweep.
There is also a "back" entrance to Capital Reef NP north of Boulder. Do some research and you can find it.
Also a "back" entrance to Arches that goes to Eye of the Whale arch.

At the North Rim, we were mostly in Kaibab National Forest. I was with a jeeper who knew the area well and we didn’t have any permits but it’s always a good idea to check with the local authorities if you’re unsure. As a general rule, camping in National Forests is permitted anywhere it’s not signed as prohibited with a few exceptions (must be well away from running water, roads, structures etc.). We saw maybe three vehicles and less tha a dozen folks and were there over Memorial Day weekend. The other trails were about the same with regard to usage.

Good suggestions from Y2kbaja as well.
