I am an electrical bozo, trying to use a nice Fluke 87V meter to measure AC voltage? on my ac/heating thermostat. When I turn the meter onto volts, and move the probes around without touching anything the meter is reading 18.7-47. What the heck is that?

Millivolts maybe, If it's on auto-range it will change the scale to show whatever voltage is present.

Yes, it seems to be on auto-range. Thanks, Joeyv. I found how to change the range.
