Hey guys I'm brand new to The Forum and excited to be here. I bought my Tacoma new a little over a year and a half ago and it came pretty naked with zero accessories, one of those being without a roof rack. I see a lot of mods with roof top tents sitting on top of roof racks but everywhere I look for load ratings, the heaviest rating I can find is 165 lb. Kind of conflicting considering some of these roof top tents themselves way upwards of 200 lb, That's not including the three or four people sometimes that they can accommodate. Does anybody have any suggestions for roof racks and roof top tents?

Welcome to TW! Which racks were you looking at that only had load ratings in that range? Most that I've seen are rated for 500-600+ pounds static and around half that dynamic.

^This. Make sure you understand static and dynamic ratings.

I have prinsu roof racks and use a tent. No issues with it and would not hesitate to have 2-3 adults in the tent.

Sorry guys, I should've been more specific. I wanted to put a RTT on the cab and even though I've seen it, I haven't done enough research to find out what roof rack setup will allow me to hold a potential five to six hundred pounds on the cab! Do you have a suggestion as to what manufacturers I can look at?

Lol my bad. I was thinking bed racks. Still I'm not sure about the specs but plenty of people safely run either Prinsu or Frontrunner roof racks and put RTTs on them.

Thanks boogie. I'm looking at both right now. When you say static, does that mean displaced over the entire rack as opposed to dynamic being the load placed in the center?

    Yeah.
Static would be the truck not moving, dynamic meaning the truck is moving.

This was my setup at one point. Rhino Rack roof rack. The rack setup itself was sturdy but the wind noise, MPG, and body roll was terrible. I now mount the tent on a bed rack

Thanks guys. Thanks for the pic too Honda, and I was kind of afraid of that. I think I need to rethink my plan here. I ultimately wanted to be able to load my bike and camping gear in the bed and an rtt on the cab but the more I look and threads I'm reading, I think a trailer is eminent!
