I'm looking to get a remote start (possibly with optional security) system for my 2015 AC. I know of the popular brands like viper and compustar but what is everyone else using? I'd love to find something I can install myself, I don't think some of the bigger brands will warranty anything not installed by an authorized dealer. Not sure how comfortable I am letting some goon at best buy touch my factory wiring.

I had a Compustar 2 way installed 3 years ago when I got my Tacoma. Still works great, plenty happy with it.

I'm not electrically gifted so I let a shop install it, locally I went to an reputable independent shop that specializes in stereos as I wanted someone with experience to do the install. The guys at the big box stores around here I don't trust. What scared me is that a bad starter install can mess with so many things on a vehicle.

I agree, I called a local dealer and they want $600 to install the Viper 2 way LCD! I have a call out to another dealer and I'll try to find some smaller shops to compare prices. The dealer gives me more confidence as I'm sure they do these on Tacomas daily and have the install down real clean, is it worth the extra money though?

I didn't want an alarm, i think they're more of a nuisance than anything else. I got a compustar professionally installed. I love it. I just got the basic one, does keyless entry features as well. Range is about 1000 feet which is much better than the oem key fob.

I had a bad install once in a car a while back and for me the extra cost was worth every penny. Can't say it was 100% the starters fault but I had all kinds of weird electrical things happen that I swear weren't there before.

When you're considering a shop for a remote start, ask them if they solder and heat shrink the connections or if they use T taps and butt connectors.

Viper 2way security/remote start with smartstart app. Installed by a friend at Best Buy 8 years ago. No issues, all connections solder/heat shrunk.

What did this cost? Does BB normally solder?

I got the alarm at cost for less than $200 and I tipped my buddy $100 for the install. Depending on the best buy locations, some solder some don't. Best to ask the installer themselves. I've heard stories where some locations just want the clients in and out and use butt connectors and t-taps. DEI has made installation of their systems easier over the years by providing T-harnesses so there is minimal cutting/splicing into the factory wiring.

Here's one of the latest model from DEI. https://www.amazon.com/Viper-5906V-...=8-5&keywords=viper+remote+start+alarm+system

If you have the factory keyless entry, this is a good option if you're after a remote start add-on to your existing key fob.

They are feeding you a line of BS. Had a Clifford system installed on wife’s car. No alarm needed. Clifford is a part of the same company as Viper.

My remote start was installed on my truck when I bought it used, so I don’t know a whole lot about it, but it doesn’t have an alarm. It is a Viper remote start/keyless entry only system.

Mine is the older version of this system if I am not mistaken:
