Extended boot mod for inner cv axle

    tools needed:

    nippers/ tin snips
    flathead
    brass punch
    snapring remover
    rags or towels

i have a torn cv i swapped out for my spare some time back from moab, it is torn at the inner cv towards the small end. make sure you mark with a green pen on the shaft, housing so when you remove the parts, things will come back how they are oriented. You can see i use green paint on the cv to indicate this.

    fLjdjiSoKjI8xTJHxOXNW29-gM4mbJNro1P9r43g_8f60fd275a9dc5039f6153fc8b98e278aa45cddb.jpg

clean the outside and begin by cutting both of the metal clamps, be careful cutting the smaller end as you want to save that to reuse later for the extended mod. Once the large clip for the boot is cut, start cutting down the boot to expose the shaft. Simply pull up on the housing to expose the tripods. Cut down and around the smaller end of the boot to save it for later. Inspect the tripod bearings for wear and wipe clean

    bJJoyITWuT5WqS28W9Ejyq4f56c7r1afCRSAaB2D_51e7debaa3f19f81edcdf55401754e6843a96969.jpg
    VT9ZBoUgp1L1i4FTusSQmMRasa1063775YVIi3m__57c6d47bc68400e7ca9380c442ffb4f069d20be4.jpg

once cleaned, mark the top of the axle shaft with green paint along the tripod body so when they are pulled apart, they come back together as is -- as shown below

    u5uRnpM5TaE5uJJ36dTGtzIsr1nGaPjs-puaaX2a_34c7acac198e0c579afb129239a2203e9de55d45.jpg

remove the snap ring that holds the tripod on and save for later. Use a brass punch and smack the bottom of the lip of the tripod to push it out of the splines, mine too some effort to remove. once off proceed to clean and inspect splines. Cover splines with tape as you slide new boot on to prevent any tears. slide in the new clamps, new boot, old boot in that order as shown:

    1NEYYpqZlYhOHuBInMEl2NMi_s2ma6eayQao-qb1_c12a140c4365e3a9506c8ebfe50c916703a60dae.jpg

from here take the old snap ring and slide it into the grove just before the old boot piece, this will keep the boot in plate and prevent it from sliding back -- see picture

    CEWWoPlDrZ3V9u2In6XC3ve5nbqd92o8b1gn3RY7_dfb463eed31d324c535288304a39565e7844eb96.jpg

spread grease into the bearings, boots, and housing and assemble the cv in reverse. Make sure you use the new supplied snap ring to hold the tripod in place

    W3ckPE-XO0Jij5tWbYTUN2_nFjRB6gsS3W_18t78_93ecc1e7ba6953fde72e005f9bdc2f8744d43587.jpg

use tin snips to cut the extra bands

and you are done with extended boots :)

How to remove stuck lock cylinders in rotopax handles

    tools needed:

    -power drill
    -cobalt bits
    -punch

Ive had a cylinder get stuck in one of my roto handles while in storage, dont ask how it happened because i dont know.

Since I have other handles with locks i removed the locks and guessed where the locking mechanisms are while inserted into the handle. From there I used a punch to mark the drill point and proceeded to drill the entire lock cylinder hole out as shown.

    bhjkIRvc2VQOrMpUAHqwbN0yIQuiXBfJRHGn90MY_dd6a455c4b10fbf31849f54b869a09626e43cc52.jpg

after you have drilled out the desired size, back out the nyloc nut on the bottom handle to slide it out from bottom, OR you can just pull on the cylinder with the key inserted because nothing is holding the lock in anymore

Looks good John! Only thing I’d add is to cover the splines with electrical tape before sliding the new boot over. Just a precaution so you don’t cut up the new boot.

Let me know how you like these and if they hold the tools snugly, I am considering them for my shovel and mattock.

No rack, my intent was to mount on the passenger side of my canopy, I don't have windows so it would be a good spot, plan to put a set of Tred Pros on the drivers side.

I saw the double but I was unsure how that would work with a mattock, and the locking ability is important to me.

so ive been entertaining this idea to lower the airbag cradle as far down as possible since you loose uptravel since it sits over the u bolt nuts, I have a bunch of 3/16 and some 1/4" steel lying around.....and i was browsing total chaos website late night and found these for wider leafs.....id have to make them specific to my leafpack but i can make a tab to mount the cradle to sit flush ontop.

i would of course make an extended tab over to the side or something to accommodate the offset of the cradle mount.

Don't buy the ubolt relocation plates, I have a set sitting in my garage, PM me your address and I'll ship em to you, they are collecting dust. I, at one time was going to go that route myself but ended up going with my current configuration.
