Alright guy and gals. I’m new to the page. ( as a member ) I’ve been researching for months now and I can seem to find the answer I’m looking for. Hopefully I can get some answers now.

I have a 01 Tacoma trd 4wd. Originally I had the elocker rear end. 4:10s. I got t-boned a few months ago, I since then found a axle with out elocker, 4:10s. I was wondering if the axle size is the same, I’d like to put my factory axle back in. (Cut and weld)

    See pics.

I guess the question is is the size the same? Could I cut the bent portion out, weld the good portion in? Had it been done? Is it possible? What’s the best route? HELPP!!!!!

If anyone is near sc, or in sc. do you have a spare elocker axle housing you’d like to trade for good non elocker housing? (4:10s)

Idk about cutting and welding but i dont see why you just dont put the other axel in and upgrade to a Detroit or arb locker

But the houseing should be all the same if you wanna :sawzall:and:welder:

You'll never get that axle straitened out. You'd have to cut the entire tube out and weld in a new one in an axle jig. Be cheaper and easier to just source a junkyard axle.

http://www.car-part.com is a pretty good site to see what's out there without having to call around.

This is one of those rare times where I agree with the above. That isn't for fixable for less than how much another would cost.

    First off, welcome to tacomaworld!
Ive never heard of anybody welding a housing back together and it could be very difficult if you attempt it. I think they would be interchangeable (only thing I can think of would be ABS vs non-ABS having different designs to accommodate for the tone ring). If you do decide to weld it make sure alignment of the tube is perfect to save your tires and it may be worth adding some trusses for extra strength, while you are there.
I would recommend just swapping in the open rear end to get the truck drivable and then just keep an eye out for a new elocker housing. If your elocker is ok a new housing shouldn't be too hard to find or too expensive. The link jberry813 posted is really helpful btw

He was only doing about 50-60 in a 35. Surprisingly that’s all it did, wheel didn’t crack, was able to pull most of the dent out. Fucked his car more than it did my truck. Toyota FTW .

Thanks! And as far as abs I didnt have it in either axle. My old boss is a wiz at cutting and welding, I’ve seen/helped him cut and shorten a few axles. That’s why I was wondering if it’s the same. But as far as finding a housing... that’s the hard part. It’s either 600-1500. I feel like just throwing a locker or something in the axle would be just fine. But I also feel like putting it back to “factory” would better accommodate the truck. But as far interanls everything is okay beside the shaft on the bent side.

I've got a second gen axle I'd sell. Third is regeared to 4.88s and has an ARB.

    <Sarcastic Font> Never been offroad </Sarcastic Font>

Might need a new axle shaft though :anonymous:

EDIT: Damn I just saw you are a first gen. Your axle is 5 inches narrower than a second gen.

X2 on the edit. What tire set up on the 4.88s? Thinking about just saying f**k it and regearing.

car-part.com is your friend. Let the yard know you just need the housing and shafts, not the actual third member. Should't cost more than a couple hundred. Worst case, get an elocker bare housing and stuff third gen 4Runner shafts in it. They are plentiful in junkyards and super cheap. Or worst-worst case, just put a non elocker axle housing and third member in it. Should be a few hundred at most.

Wow... How did you get hit hard enough to do that to the axle, and not destroy the bed?

    Amazing!!!

    Where are you located?
I have 2 spares you can have if yours are non abs.
They are trail spares. The flange is slightly off on both. No vibes. When I say slightly...i mean just barely visable.

Edit: or I have a brand new one that was used for 2 days I'd let go for $300. I believe it's oem and was over $400 new.

I do have a brand new set of 4340 chromos. Non abs sitting in my hallway.
Probably have a rough time getting those from me :) but trail gear usually has them on sale quite a bit. 120 degree twist rate and some insane torque.

While the axle housing could be repaired .

The cost of a used housing even spending the money for new gears new springs and assorted hardware would be cheaper.

In either case the axle housing needs removed

I’ve been riding around with a non elocker axle with 4:10s since the day after, just wanting to go back with the factory elocker... but yes my internals are all good expect the shaft on the bent side

He was only doing about 50-60 in a 35 and more or less side swiped me, hit the tire and a little bit of my rear bumper. But for the most part the axle took all the damage.. wheel wasn’t cracked or bent, tire still full of air. Surprised the hell outta me. He sent me into a 180 spin.

I’m in columbia, I’d defiantly get the chomos off ya if anything, but I really need the axle housing fixed before anything. Because for the cheap route to get it back going I’ll throw a junk yard shaft it in.

Why can’t you just put your e-locking 3rd into the non locking housing and be done? Am I missing something about the interchangeability of these things?

The housing is different and would require fabrication in order for it to fit. He is better off selling the e locker and buying a arb locker or something similar and stickig that in the other axel

Damn I never knew I always thought you could buy the 3rd member and swap it in. So what would need to be done to make it fit? Maybe that’s an option since the op is already willing to fugin weld up a new axle tube lol
