Just a heads up to keep following distance

I drive professionally for a living (18 wheeler) and I used to race motorcycles so I would like to consider myself at least a psuedo competent driver, that being said I noticed the brakes are pure shit on my truck (a big fuck you to mike sweers, I hope he chokes on a chode for putting these pos drum brakes and the biggest slap in the face is how he insults us by saying it's better. He might as well tell us to wear a fucking helmet before getting on the short bus so fuck him and his patronizing ass, if my next vehicle isnt a toyota which is more and more likely it will be because of him!)

Anyway rant aside, there have been a few instances where the pos brakes locked up on me (coming up to a dead stop on freeways where they merge) I always use the SMITH system when I drive so I always look ahead and keep a good following distance so even though the brakes lock up I've never been close to hitting anyone but had I not I probably could have.

So just wanted to give everyone a friendly reminder not to have false confidence in your brakes and not to rely on them in a oh shit situation, they WILL fuck you thanks to mike sweers and the greedy money pinching bean counters at toyota, shame on you toyota, a real disappointment once again

 

If you really drive an 18 wheeler you would know that they use drum brakes as well.. so they must be alright.
Never had an issue with drums in the back. I will say the brakes feel undersized for the size of the truck.

 

The trailers I run use discs. All new tractors and trailers use discs now. It's not the point (I sure as shit don't think being a truck driver is something worth lying about). So you're happy with the sheep mentality? Also big rigs don't brake the same way cars do

Drums keep costs down and work pretty well. I have NEVER had an issue with drum brakes. They don't wear as much and they are cheaper to maintain. Just because you don't know how to drive it's not toyotas fault.

 

No issues with my drum brakes, 2nd gen, 1st gen and now 3rd gen.

I was overreacting of the brakes, but in all honesty they are crappier than they should be. I have total confidence in my driving abilities so it doesnt worry me, just pisses me off they skimp on crap like that but there are ignorant people out there who assume these trucks stop on a dime and that isnt the truth

 

I drive truck also, I don’t have a problem with these brakes.

 

Don't get me wrong, this is my 5th toyota truck (had a 1 st gen and a few older ones) and it's the best one I've owned, I think it's a badass truck just disappointed in a few things. Getting off the soap box now, drive safe everyone.

I apologize if I offended anyone including homer (75ze8) but ya do keep your following distance people, discs brakes or not. And besides the truck could have been worse, at least it's not a 2nd gen! (Jkjk)

 

If your truck locks up there is somethimg seriously wrong with it, as we have ANTI LOCK brakes. Stopping distance is purely a function of your tires and the road material. Has nothing to do with discs or drums. Its simple physics really. Stopping distance of our trucks is about the same as any vehicle that has the same mass. You know you could have got a different vehicle right? One where it wouldn't compel you to come on the internet and rant?

 

You're absolutely right, I think there is an issue with the abs though and will have them check it out during the 5k service and report back

 

It's also how your truck is set up. Brake somewhat hard and all your weight shifts to the front, allowing the rear to lock easier. Truck beds are light. I replaced the soft front springs and have to be trying to lock my rear brakes now. It would be more concerning if I could never lock them(or engage ABS) on purpose. Hasn't been an issue, but yes, everyone should keep a safe distance from each other, regardless of what you are driving.
