Ok guys I ended up camping at Deadmans Creek Camspite ( met up with @mhshark and his buddy ) and its a awesome site! Plenty of shade, a good sized creek close by, it has a porta potty style concrete outhouse, just no running water besides the creek. No reservations required, no fees. Each spot has a fire pit and table. I think this might be the best option if we can all grab a spot. There were 3-4 spots open when we rolled in later saturday afternoon so if some of us get there thursday and early friday monring I think we have a good shot at all getting spots together. This campsite is a 10- 15 minute drive from Mammoth and only 20 minutes or so to June Lake.

There are little swimming/fishing holes scattered around , just deep enough to take a dunk in, and there are also a bunch of trout if you look close in the 2nd photo below you can see them

In case we cannot fit in the campsite, I found 2 great spots for off grid camping, we can all fit in one area in these spots.
    upload_2018-7-2_9-15-7.jpg

    DIRECTIONS TO OFF GRID SITE

Turn left at Mammoth Scenic Loop and drive for just under 1 mile then Turn right ( 4th right turn) This is Dry Creek Cutoff Road

You will drive for 0.4 miles then turn right ( picture for reference )
    upload_2018-7-2_9-20-36.jpg
Then you will drive for roughly 0.6 miles and the campsite is on the right hand side. There are actually 2 spots, one is closer and the other one is 0.6 miles in.

Off grid spot #1. This is the first one you will pass on your right. ( I was driving back out so its on my left in this photo)

Off grid spot #2. This one if 0.6 miles in on your right hand side.

Most of the back roads look like this, with some super soft sand sections mixed in so anyone with 2wd and good tires should be fine getting around. Its super fun just cruising through the back roads.

The air conditions were pretty good for most of the trip. On sunday the wind changed and blew some smoke in, but since I was camping the whole weekend it wasn't bad since I smelled like camp fire anyways lol

Someone re built the rope swing at gull lake and its awesome right now! Water is super warm ( for the sierras ) haha probably 60-65 degrees. I will for sure be spending a good 1/4 of a day at this spot swimming and fishing.

haha to clarify.... you will pass 3 roads on your right side before you turn onto dry creek cutoff. so you will make the 4th right turn , then after that 2 more right turns so almost a circle lol There is another way to get to this spot but the trail had fallen trees and was super narrow so I didn't even try.

@TacoSauceHB Looks like you founds some great spots for us! My brother-in-law and I are leaving SD after work on Thurs, so I know we won't be able to make it the entire way that night. We'll likely pull off in A.H. and catch a little rest then be up there EARLY Friday morning to Deadmans Creek Campsite. We'll grab two spots at least, if they're open.
If our group has to use the other group site for overflow, how far away was it from Deadmans? Perhaps we just want to all camp there instead of the campground? I'm game with either choice.

@JaCado Do you know if you'll be able to join us or not that weekend?

To be honest, I think the off grid site would be better for our size group. We could all park close together in a big circle and have a party lol But then again it is nice to have a fire ring with bbq and some place to poop in the morning haha Its about 15 minute drive between off grid campsite and deadmans creek.

Yea, pro's and con's for both. We'll need to carry a lot more water at the dispersed site. I'm sure there's probably a spigot at the campground. OTOH, we'll have a lot more people around us and may not all be able to get a spot. But, we DO get a vault toilet.

Good either way to be honest. I always prefer off the grid sites over a camp ground.

but... Stream and Poopatorium sound pretty swell.

I am doing the same thing, leave Thursday after work and get to Lone Pine around 10/10:30 and camp there, grab breakfast at Alabama Hills cafe ( opens at 6am ) then head into Mammoth.
