So, I Installed my prinsu cabrack last week and when I was driving on the highway at speeds over 59 MPH my mirror was vibrating uncontrollably to the point I couldnt see what lane the cars behind me were in. I have never seen this before in my 2018 Tacoma, as I progressed down the road and kept up with traffic the vibrations got severely worse and the mirror started chattering audibly.

Has anyone else had this issue, or did my truck just decide to go full retard?

I have since Changed the wind deflector location from as lowly mounted as possible to one higher. This seems to have solved the issue20180701_164949.jpg
You can see where the wind deflector is mounted in the middle 2 bolt holes, where prior it was the bottom two. I would like to replace the aluminum cross member for the wind deflector with a steel one and slide it back down and see if it is a structural rigidity issue.

My theory is that when comparing the imposed wind speed of the narrow gap between the roof and wind deflector vs the imposed wind speed above the vehicle there is enough of a differential in the airflow to vibrate it at the perfect frequency to piss off the mirror. With the gap widened there is enough space between the upper and lower edge of the deflector that it does not vibrate as badly. I modeled the wind deflector in solid works, but I could not get a flow simulation to run properly let alone show how that flow would impact the wind deflector... one day I will get good at ansys.

I ended up getting weather stripping and plugging that stuff on the bottom of the wind deflector and lowering the cross member all the way. Its not very noticable as far as wind noise is concerned. and there is minimal impact on my mpg

a steel extrusion will be absolutely no more rigid than aluminum. i recommend putting the bulb seal on the bottom of the deflector and moving it back down.

Move your wind deflector down a hole and install the weather stripping across the bottom. Should solve your issues.

Got rid of my prinsu rack fairly quickly. Most useless POS I've ever purchased.

Not salty, it caused crazy rattling with my sunroof linkage during normal driving. When I removed the prinsu, rattling stopped. I know it's the sunroof linkage because I can still slap the headliner and duplicate the noise.

That sounds like a sunroof issue and not a prinsu issue, even if the prinsu exacerbated the problem. We’re getting off topic though.

Have the deflector on lowest setting with no weatherstrip.
    Never had a problem.

Uh, say what? It has nearly 3x the bending stiffness for a given cross section.

But dont you think in this application it would be negligible? Its not like there is that much force upon the wind fairing

    2017 Tacoma OR 4x4 (formerly 2002 OR 4x4, 1995 4x4 4Runner, 1985 4x4 Toy PU) ... and RIP’s (rust in pieces) to a Bronco II 4x4 & S10 Blazer 4x4
    image.jpg

Try using the weatherstrip mentioned by others on the bottom edge and push the fairing down, the top part back and the bottom part foreward while tightening it in the lowest setting so it sits just above the roof at the lowest angle to the wind possible without actually touching the roof (you dont want leaves and such getting caught behind it). This worked best for me and it is stable going 70mph in a heavy headwind.

I don’t know why a few others hated them, but for me it was the best solution for use as a RTT base and a elevated photography platform I can stand on with a tripod (on a diamond plate base).

I like the cabrack so much, I even made a matching lasercut aluminum rack like the Prinsu to go on top of my MX shell:

I bought it half for standing on half for throwing kayaks on and probably another half for style points. I have already ordered some weather stripping \m/ It took a day or two to get used to seeing the rack on my truck but now that I have gotten used to it I really like having it.
