I only ever had one long-hair cat back when I was a child. She would get mats on her belly and hind legs and my mom would just take her to get groomed. She looked hilarious when she came home because her head, paws, and the end of her tail would still be long. :D

Our Maine Coon would mat up pretty badly. He was not happy about being groomed.

This is one option. My groomer had what looked like a regular comb but was sharpened at the base of the teeth. Picture a serrated knife/comb combo. If I can find one I'l post a link.

Everyone has given good advice and I have used both the scissors and the mat remover as well. We have Persians who also can get mats so we use a “rake comb”. We have also tried, as the beauty salon wants to call it, a personal shaver. It is essentially an electric razor that is only about an inch wide and it works very well.

We do all our own grooming and I agree with @Norsemanvike, getting at them when they are small makes life so much easier. Although, it’s not always possible.

    Good luck!!

Pay close attention to your cats daily, get a good pair of scissors that you only use for your cats. take your time and remove them. Make it a positive experience give them a couple treats when your done. When you cat has had enough let them walk away, after awhile they figure out your helping them and will hang out until you are done. If the mats are really bad get them shaved down. I also have a pair of clippers and do that my self. Every cat is different, and you know or will learn what your cat will tolerate. good luck!

    Thanks!
RIP unfortunately.. He was an awesome Cat though. He came to us as a stray.
We used to call him the Godfather cuz even our 3 dogs wouldn’t mess with him:
If he was drinking water out of the dish, the dogs would wait in line behind him.

    Sorry to hear that.
He’s left you with some awesome and funny memories it seems.
I know I already said it but that photo with the green around him is outstanding.

Two years ago today I brought this guy home...

Found abandoned in my sisters garage... a few vet visits and about a month or so worth of acclimating he became part of the family.

Here’s our Ollie today on his two year “adoptiversary”:

As with most everything except his food dish he seems unimpressed. :D

I will say he’s the only cat I’ve ever had that is extremely afraid of fireworks. He disappeared into his hideout all evening yesterday. :(

Congrats on the birthday/anniversary! Our poor phoebe hid under the bed all night last night, thunder and fireworks both get her a bit scared too

Right? My wife & I said the same thing this morning. Ollie turned a very dark orange compared to when we was a kitten. Also interestingly he’s the most symmetrical cat I’ve seen - all his stripes and markings are the same on each side.
