I am also a big fan of the mid depth socket line that Carlyle offers. I find them as my go to sets most of the time.

If anyone finds themselves wanting to get into buying the Carlyle line make sure you look at the quarterly pro tool flyer, they offer some good prices in that.

I’m an old guy ... my first set of metric combination wrenches which I still use every day are PowrKraft, from Montgomery Ward, and I have lots of US-made Craftsman hand and power tools ... so I am (or was) a sucker for the Craftsman name. Unfortunately I made a pretty big investment in a bunch of 18V Craftsman cordless stuff a few years ago. We actually still have a Sears in our town, and Orchard Supply Hardwae also carried Craftsman, probably a legacy from when Sears bought them. But now OSH (owned by Lowe’s) is closing, and there’s no Lowe’s anywhere near me. So I’m worried that if I need new batteries, etc my tools will be orphans. Yeah, I know, Amazon ...

You would be better off to switch to Milwaukee or Ridged when the time comes for batteries.

I read an interesting thing the other day about the Craftsman deal. Sears will continue to get a royalty for 10 or 15 years from Stanley and they will continue to sell Craftsman, however Stanley Black and Decker will transition there tools back to Made in the USA and have there own line of Craftsman tools coming out while Sears will continue their own line of Craftsman.

Sears will probably be joining Montgomery Ward, Radio Shack, Circuit City and other out of business retailers by 2020 at the latest as it is so if Craftsman can up there quality and go back to made in the USA they'll be considered by me..

I wonder if Lowe's will honor the craftsman lifetime warranty on individual sockets, etc?

Edit- jesus didnt realize this was a zombie thread.
I see dewalt cordless all day long on construction work sites, but I guess you could make a pretty good argument that we are all cheap fawks. If you dont buy the cheapest level of their impacts, drills and saws they will last just fine.

I have zero desire to buy anything named craftsman any more. Have a cordless drill and impact wrench. When they die, my craftsman collectcol will be officially dead

I rock too many Dewalt 18V cordless tools to consider changing over to the 20V current ones so I understand the question. Luckily I can still buy 18V stuff from Amazon including the 18V NIMH batteries.

I have a 20 year old 16 gallon 5.5 hp Craftsman shop vac and last week I bought a replacement filter for it from Amazon ( first time replacing it) and it was a perfect fit.

I have a lot of old Craftsman hand tools, many are great but newer socket sets have better options like easier to read sizes so a lot have been replaced.

I have two full sets of Craftsman wrenches in metric and standard and they will not be replaced. Same with extensions, ratchets, size adapters and more.

Answered my own question today. No, because they don't carry individual pieces today. Supposedly they will carry individuals in the future.

Craftsman... Guaranteed for life, or until we go out of business.

I love my Craftsman hand tools, but their power tools have let me down too many times. I will only buy Makita power tools now.

All the power tools are totally revamped by the new owners. Should be much much better than what Sears was pumping out. Not sure I’d say they are Makita competitors but they aren’t Black and Decker either. If you regularly used Kobart or Ryobi, then the new CM stuff is probably for you, maybe even a step above those brands.

They bought Dewalt in the ‘60s. They bought them for their radial arm saw design, which they began selling as B&D. Sometime in the ‘80s they sold the arm saw division but held onto the Dewalt name. They didn’t do anything with the brand until 1992 when they started rebranding B&D Industrial as Dewalt. There is no significance to 2004 in the history of Dewalt. The same company that owns them (SBD) did buy Porter Cable that year, but Dewalt was already well established at that point.

Yea, it surprises me how many times ppl call Dewalt junk, but are comparing the "budget" level impact driver to the $300 Milwaukee. Milwaukee makes a cheap ass impact too, you just don't find it in Home Depot. But if you pick up the equivalent Dewalt and compare it to the Milwaukee, it's nearly the same. Some might like the Milwaukee better, some might like the Dewalt better. They will both be pretty damn good. All the brands play the price point game. Milwaukee benefits from having to play it less because they are exclusive to Home Depot. But in the end, in the same price point, the tools are nearly the same.

Man, there is a lot going on in this post. I'd like to add a little information to it.

Milwaukee whores out their brand too. I'm not sure why you are specifically knocking Dewalt for this. But Milwaukee is stamped on all kinds of shit these days. So I'm not sure what your point is, or why it's only a problem for Dewalt to take advantage of its brand, but a problem when Milwaukee does it.

Why are they dead? I agree that Sears pumped out tons of shitty tools in recent years, but the current owners have revamped the entire product line and based a lot of the power tools on Dewalt tools, but at better price points. I mean, lets not kid ourselves. CM was never a professional brand, they have always been a homeowner brand. Good tools at good prices for the guy that likes to do things himself. Now recently Sears couldn't afford to hold up to the good tools end of that. But anyone that used previously US made CM in the good ol' days on a jobsite knew that you were returning their tools monthly for a new one cause they just didn't hold up to professional use. Nothing has changed about that moving forward. But the tools will be better than they have been in the last 10 years.

Again, I'm not sure you realize this, but Milwaukee was bought by a tool conglomerate, TTI. Wouldn't your same argument then hold for Milwaukee as well? Also, at least SBD (that now owns CM and Dewalt) is an American company. TTI is foreign based.

Again, you are judging newly designed tools from a different company based on crap that Sears did. The new shit is far better than anything Sears has put out in the past 10 years. Keep an open mind and evaluate the new tools from the view point of a homeowner/DIY, not a pro. You sound like a professional and probably don't use any of the brands that CM is built to compete with. But I think it's nonsense that Kobalt and Husky are better than the new CM stuff, and you've kinda just spit-balled that out there without actually using the new stuff.
