Last month, on my 2018 DCSB TRD OR with 2.5k miles, I had a big chip repaired in the center of the windshield.

Today, another rock chipped the windshield and instantly caused this 12" crack (that I'm also getting repaired- not replaced).

For contrast, my 01 DCSB TRD OR with 120k miles is still on it's original windshield and this has been taken offroad a number of times for biking and fishing trips. My 2012 WRX had 80k miles and is still on it's original windshield. This car also has a number of offroad miles.

    Ok, venting over.

Getting my 4Runner repaired for a rock chip in 30 mins. Knock on wood this is the first time it happening on the runner or Tacoma. I heard people in Arizona replace or repair windshields like crazy.

I'm going to get my windshield replaced for 3RD TIME!!! :annoyed: (In past 8 months)

-I think the 3rd gen glass is more brittle than previous generations. (Maybe because of the "acoustic enhancement") :notsure:

I drive mostly interstate to get to work everyday. I have so many rock chips (I think 3 this year) I'm just gonna get em all repaired at once, can't be going to the glass shop so much.

...there's got to be a spray to strengthen/help protect from rock chips/cracks. I've seen a windshield film-protector online (pricey), don't know of spray windshield protector.:help:

Never seen a crack repair before, only chips.

If you can post post repair pics that would be interesting to see.

I had my local glass guy (Frank from Novus in Bay Area) fix the crack. It's mostly invisible now but you can still see it if you really look for it. The way it's going, I feel like this is just a temporary fix until the next crack and windshield replacement. Frank said he'll put the money for the windshield repair towards a new windshield if it comes to that. Great guy and good repair.

The before picture showed that the crack was about 12" long from the base of the windshield. By the end of the day, due to the heat, it was closer to 15" long.

The fix involved dremeling to the glass along the crack line so he can pump resin into the crack at a high psi using a resin injection tool. You then pump, at high pressure, into the crack moving the injection tool along the crack line as you do so. After some drying time, you scrape off the excess using a razor blade then put a thin coat of resin along cover it with plastic strips. The resin is cured using a UV Lamp. Take the plastic off, scrap the excess resin until it's flush with the windshield. Clean the windshield then you're done.

Since I know where the crack was and know where to look, I can see the crack but I think over time, I won't even see it anymore. There were some air bubbles in the crack which makes it a little bit more visible if you know where to look. My main concern was that the crack doesn't spread. I know I'll eventually have to replace the windshield anyway but I'm holding on to the OEM glass for as long as I can.

Confirmed. Got my 4runners windshield replaced within the first month or two. I was chipped again within one day. AZ sucks.

When my glass was getting cleaned last night during the repair, I saw like 5 new rock chips (small enough not to worry about though).

You should have replaced it. I had a chp pull me over in my sti with a crack like that on the windshield. How much was the fix? $50?

I had a huge rock hit my truck 2 weeks ago around Danville/San Ramon on 680s. It didn't chip the windshield though

My current daily commute is from San Ramon to Stockton and back and it seems to be chip city. I'll wait until my windshield is full of chips before I get it replaced. I like to keep the OEM glass as long as possible.
