Just bought a brand new 2016 Toyota Tacoma SR5 - long bed double cab. My first pickup that I bought to tow a light travel trailer and go camping and fishing now that I'm retired!

Unfortunately, I had an engine check light come on after just a day and 1/2 ownership and 81 miles. Checked the gas cap first, but no luck there. Took it to the dealership to have them look at it.

It's Saturday now and no truck. They've identified a problem with #5 cylinder - it's only at about 50% compression. They say they'll have to pull the head. I'm not anticipating that this car will be back in my hands any time soon - at least a week and 1/2, I think.

The dealer gave me a total run around when I asked that they exchange this vehicle for another one - they wanted to arrange a trade-in deal and valued my brand new pickup at $7000 less than what I paid for it just a few days before!

Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated! This is my 7th Toyota and I've never experienced anything like this.

As a customer who just bought a brand new vehicle I would be putting a lot of pressure on the dealership management to take the vehicle back immediately. It is not in the dealers interest to have unhappy customers.

Welcome to TW from another fellow Rhode Islander. Sorry to hear that you are having bad luck with this truck right out of the gate. Hope that the dealer gets into gear and does right by you. I would be pressing for an extended warranty or some type of compensation for your trouble. Good luck to you!!

Thanks for the responses! And especially good to hear from another fellow Rhode Islander!

We went to the dealer on Saturday to try and get this resolved. At first, they seemed amenable even going so far as to show us another truck and ask if that was acceptable. We agreed to pay the difference between the MSRP of our 2016 and the 2017 they showed us.

That's when it went downhill. They tried to tell us that they would be taking our existing Toyota in trade with a trade in value of $25000! $9000 less than what we'd paid for it just a few days before! And $7000 less than what we'd paid for it AND the KBB trade in value. Dealership clearly doesn't want to negotiate in good faith, and clearly doesn't want to provide us with a replacement.

I've now contacted the dealership GM directly and am awaiting a response. I'll keep ya'll updated!
