I'd probably take a a good piece of wood and run it down on one side of the side walk. Then from start packing it in from the other side pushing it in with blunt small object of your availability. Making sure to really pack it in against that wood piece. I would get it wet after that a bit (lightly wet), and pack it some more. It's really only going to get damp around the sides. Then remove the wood, pack down the sides a bit more and keep an eye on it.

 

Couple of expanding spray foam grenades outa do the trick.

Thanks! Been working on it since I posted and did most of what you recommended. The far side was closed, and this slab is surrounded by other slabs on three sides. At first I packed it into the far side kicking it with my foot, then started using a hoe-like garden tool to reach in and pack it each time I added a layer of dirt. I'm also tamping the dirt down on the side where we dug the hole. We have sandy dirt here, and even though I had the dirt covered with a tarp, last night's rain dampened it. It's similar in dampness and consistency to the sand we used in high school to create sand molds for casting, so I figure it's packing OK and won't dry out too much and contract over time.
