Speedometer correction

2018 limited stock. Speedometer reads 1mph slow compared to gps at 65mph

 

I have noticed the same 1 MPH discrepancy between the analog and digital speedos in both my 2017 Taco, and my recent 2014 VW Passat.

I plan to upgrade to 33" tires (Cooper ST Maxx) when my OEM Wranglers wear out, and wish I could get a speedo recalibration done. Naturally, Hypertech is not for sale in the People's Republik of Kalifornia where I live.

 

Same here. Digital is dead on with every speed sign I pass, but analog is off by 1-2 mph.

Actually, thinking about it, my analog shows 1-2 mph FASTER than the digital and/or speed signs.

 

Actually i was testing on my way home from work and i remembered wrong. Mine is the same as yours

 

Just tried the configuration lets see if it works.

 

I'm running 285/75/17s and my digital speedo is roughly 4 mph slower than my gps speed but the analog is only about 3 mph slow. Nothing major, just interested to see if there is a shop or dealership process for recalibrating it.

 

The faster you go, the more it will be off. The only way to fix it is to get a Hypertech speedometer calibrator, Toyota cant/wont adjust it. I went from stock 265/65-17 to 285/75-17 and my speedo if off 10% (30=33, 40=44, 50=55, etc.). I just bought a Hypertech and will be installing it this weekend.

Mine is getting delivered on Tuesday. It's the only solution AFAIK.

 

is this something you install and leave on or something you plug in, set your new tire size and it updates the truck and you're good to go?

 

It's a little black box you program from a Windows computer via USB cable. Once programmed with your new tire size, it gets permanently installed in your dash. The kit comes with an in-line wiring harness and USB cable. Should take about 20 minutes or less to install.

The one I got looks a little different from the one in the instructions.

 

You program it with a PC, then install it inline behind the gauge cluster.

Are you referring to the taco truck?
If so, yes.

 

With 275/65/18 I am going faster that the speedo reads.

 

Mine is the same I put 285/75/16 KO2 my GPS shows 75 while my cluster shows 70. Very interesting I guess I’m going faster than I think I am.

 

Is that like a Toyota easter egg?

 

The speedometer error doesn't translate to the same error in the odometer. And if you get 32" or 33" tires, the odometer will under-report, so you get a tiny amount of extra warranty coverage. Also keep this in mind for calculating fuel economy.

 

^The odometer is correct when running on the factory 31" tires. If you run 32" tires, the tires spin 3% fewer revs to cover the same distance, so the odometer will under-report by 3%.

 

Changing your tire size will absolutely make your odometer AND speedometer read incorrectly, shift points too - unless you get a calibrator.
