My wife and I will be setting out on a 2 month cross country trip in a few weeks living out of a built out 4x4 transit. Since we will be staying in lots of national parks and other awesome places, I figured it was time to get into taking decent pics. Few months ago I got a D5600 and started playing around. I have the kit AF-P 18-55mm VR lens and a AF-P 70-300 VR. But knowing that we will be in a lot of dark sky areas, it would be cool to take some milky way shots. Any recommendations for a lens to cover some landscape and star shots? I was looking at the AF-P 10-20 F4.5-5.6 VR. Trying to keep my budget around $300.

    Thanks!!

Tokina 11-16mm is a great option for crop-body cameras such as the D5600. I think Tokina may have a newer version out now with a slightly different range of focal lengths. Rokinon/Samyang may also have a 20mm f/2 for the Nikon mount, I have one for my Sony mirrorless that does quite nicely for dark sky shots. You're going to want something with a faster maximum aperture than f/4.5 for night sky shots. I wrote this a while back, while some of it is geared mostly to full-frame lenses, the math and principles hold for any sensor size: http://jonpfischer.com/archives/1650

I actually got the Tokina 11-16 DX-II last week and love it. I looked at the newer 11-20 but I couldn't justify the extra $ for a slightly longer focal length. So far I am loving it, its been pretty bad this past week for night shots, but I am hoping to test it out soon. I will check out your article in the morning. Thanks!

Rokinon 14-24mm (I am selling one!) I love the lens, but have upgraded to the Nikon 14-24mm.

You need F2.8 and anything 10-25mm focal distance...

    Superstition?

I don’t know what you’re asking, but I used bracketing on the first two images.
