Since Carson is back open, we spent a few days up in red river.

I wish you guys up north had gotten some of the wet stuff I encountered the past few days down here in the Lincoln National Forest. Thunder and lightning and a constant downpour all day, all night and into the next day. I badly wanted a campfire but all the wood was too soaked to burn so I sat beside my coleman fueled heater and drank vodka. And my truck got dirty...

    IMG_0804.jpg IMG_0805.jpg

Stopped by Brantley Lake on my way home. It still hasn't rained enough to fill it up.

Not much off-roading but took an impromptu trip out to Chaco Canyon. Definitely heading back to check out more of the ruins. IMG_2212.jpgIMG_2218.jpgIMG_2219.jpgIMG_2223.jpgIMG_2226.jpgIMG_2231.jpgIMG_2234.jpgIMG_2239.jpgIMG_2252.jpg

I considered heading out NW of my house last night, but I would have probably gotten stuck in the caliche. Stayed home & enjoyed the lightning show instead.

I missed the storm last week here in ABQ, but saw some nice ones in CO and northern NM. I'll post some pictures soon.

@tomtom , nice trip to Chaco. Glad to see you getting out there. I hope all is well, and we should make it a point to take a ride this fall.

Hopefully, you didn't miss tonight's storm. Definitely on getting out. While I've been getting my fill of mtbing, I've been hankering to do an overnight. Going to have to buy a tent and stove and such but at least I have a bag and pad.

Nope, we were right in the thick of it (I'm sure you've seen my posts in the other NM thread by now). You've been talking about an overnight for a couple years now, Tom... will 2018 be the year?

On another note... I figured I'd share some pictures with you guys. We took a long trip up to CO/NNM recently and hiked with the kiddos into some wilderness areas. It was the first time for our youngest, and the first time on foot for our oldest. The daily PM storms make for some gorgeous clouds and sunsets. We also visited the V.V. and a few of our favorite spots.

It needs to be the year that it happens. Been considering getting rid of the FJC because I haven't gotten out in quite awhile. The trip out to Chaco talked me out of it. Thinking about a trip up to Cerro Pedernal on Saturday to at least get out of town. Medical/personal issues coupled with work responsibilities have things out of whack. Need to bring balance to this koyaanisqatsi.

Looks like the you've been having some awesome adventures.

Nice photos of your family outing. Especially liked your daughter on the front of your truck and the two of them in the stream. Thank you for putting in the time and effort to get the family camping. (I know how much it takes.) Building family memories, love it. Future family gatherings that come to sharing memories; you will be surprised at what stuck in theirs.

The view from atop Cerro Pedernal. About 270 degrees worth.

And an FJC in the gratuitous fore/aft-ground shot. A lot less mud and snow than the last time a bunch of us made it there.

Must be a nice spot! I remember you went up there back in June (see quote).

I'm stoked to see you made it out and hit the summit, Tom. What did you think of the climb up that real steep section? I think that is where you all stopped last time when Rene, Chris, and myself went up, right?

I had to Google "koyaanisqatsi". That's a new one for me.

Thanks! Watching our two children interact in nature is amazing. It's almost a sensory overload for them, but they are right in their element out there. I've had to learn to slow down, not worry so much about the fishing, and carry a lot more stuff but it's worth it every time.

I look forward to hearing which moments stand out to them in the future.

Nick I guess old and forgetful has set in. Also been trying to get to the top of the mountain where the lookout tower is but the road gets to rough just pass the sign for me to try alone in a mostly stock vehicle.

After spending time rock climbing with S, the last climb was a piece of cake. I've also found out the glasses exacerbate the altitude sickness, something about the pressure on the bridge of the nose. I've found taking them off and waiting 5 minutes alleviates the dizziness. I could still tell I was at altitude but felt a lot more stable than last time.

It was well worth the off-road/hike/climb. There was a lot less mud than last time. Looking down on the "parking lot" had me thinking about camping out, possibly watching the setting and rising sun from up top. One of those spots to make a regular trip to.

An overnight at Chaco is on the books for the coming weekend. My lifting partner snagged a campsite reservation. Tent will be here tomorrow. Would have loved to gone for the longer trip but this is a nice surprise consolation prize.
