how is the 'best' way to buy a new truck? truck first then trade in chat? why does the salesman always want your credit card?

I figure I am going to take a loss when I trade. I have played the buy, then negotiate the trade game and also announced the trade in before buying. Not sure which is better. I'd rather sell my old one, tho that is difficult when living in a small, remote town. If a salesman wants my credit card, I will go elsewhere. I won't play the game where he gets my driver's license, either.

I always pay cash. A reasonable approach is to arrange financing thru your favorite credit union before talking to the dealer. I find it aggravating when the first question the salesman asks is, "What do you want the payment to be?" It makes more sense to know what the price is.

with the internet "build your truck" webpages, is this the price to pay, or is there latitude? I've never been a dicker-er. a dick, mostly, but if something has a price tag on it, I either buy or walk, not jiggle-jaggle for sport.

I've been in stores and heard people "negotiate" running shoes. I've also been in a restaurant (ONCE!!!) with a doctor and his wife. he drank his soda and then tried to get the waitress to refill for free because there was so much ice in the glass. I guess i'm just a "cube-sucker" . . .

Reddit has a great page called r/askcarsales which can be a very valuable resource for buying.

This video is pretty good on Trades https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kU0I3Zkz1Z0

I would NEVER give my Credit Card, I've been asked for my license to take Test Drives but have always gotten it back and its happened at every dealership I've test driven at (and theres been quite a few the past few years). That may be an NJ state law?

I always work on OTD pricing, Even when we financed our Hyundai I could care less what the payment is per month as long as the over all out the door price was where I wanted it.

thanks for the video. I chuckled when I saw the "chevy guy"; he reminded me of the "43 cars in 10 years" salesman!
