It has been nearly 15 years since I owned a truck. Over those years I repeatedly mooched off my family when I needed a truck for hauling. I got tired of the mooching so I decided to get back into a truck. Boy was I in for a shock. Silly me, I thought I could get a used truck in the low 20s or teens and a new one nicely loaded for less than 40. Who knew it was possible to drop 80k+ on a full size rig these days. When I looked at midsize trucks I was shocked to find out that their capabilities were a close match to my old 1/2 ton. My cheapness and the new to me functionality of smaller trucks shortened my shopping list dramatically

When I was shopping it came down to a Diesel Canyon SLE and my current Tacoma SR5. Gas mileage and capability were two major factors but total cost of ownership was the ultimate winner. The diesel had a nicer interior, better mileage and a 0 - 15k premium depending on the tacoma I compared it to. That premium coupled with higher fuel costs, higher maintenance costs and worse depreciation made the Tacoma the easy winner. So here it is. My new, bought with 7 miles on the odo 2wd SR5. All the utility I need coupled with the 25 mpg for commuting. There aren't any trails to run nearby, I won't be towing in mud or pulling up a boat ramp and snow down south is a rarity so 2WD was a no brainer in my case. Mods will be limited to functional add ons, some paint for the black plastic bits and perhaps a rear disk brake upgrade until I have a good grasp on the tech around this engine and trans.

Looking forward to the new challenge of tweaking this platform :)
