    Hello All,

I am trying to figure out what suspension mods i need to make so that the truck doesn't handle so poorly. for example darting left or right after driving over railroad tracks or at high speeds on the freeway feels completely unsafe. I need the truck to feel planted during these situations. I like the way my wife's stock 5th gen 4 runner rides 10X better than my truck with the tires at 40psi.

I do know this is going to be a compromise depending on choice. I will not be rock crawling or looking for maximum flex. mostly easy to maybe medium trails, fire roads, logging roads.

When I read that getting 5100's is just a slight improvement over the stock OR i was turned off simply because i don't want a soft (UNSAFE) floaty boaty suspension which in my mind feels like I would be making the situation worse. I could be wrong.

so I am now back in square one. I had the wild thought of putting the sport shocks on my Tacoma but am not sure how that would turn out.

I drove a 350z for 10 years before driving this truck and do not want to swap out the suspension 5 times like i did in the Z.

What I am looking for is improved on road performance while still being able to go off-road. I want to feel more confidence in the suspension. I have decided that I want to lift the front 1.5 inches and the rear one inch. I do not want preloaded stock coils on 5100's because i do not want to loose any suspension travel.

I also hate progressive springs. I prefer linear.

Is there anyone who has went thru a similar issue when trying to decide on where to go next?

it feels like a huge dilemma to me.

    Thanks!

I have 5100s/5160s on mine. The 5100s are noticeably stiffer than the stock OR suspension on the road. The digressive valving means you feel more of the small bumps and will get less initial dive/roll. I think a lot of the people calling them soft are comparing them to the more linear valving of some of the more expensive options and even then the 5100s only feel softer in certain situations (i.e. larger, higher speed impacts).

Also pre-loading the springs does not really affect suspension travel. The spring will still compress down to the bump stop when fully flexed.
