I'm around the same age as OP, bought a new Tacoma last year, own a R6, and have a Civic as a commuter.

    Are you copying me?

I did exactly what you did OP when I was I my 20s.

I had a mr2 until I was 27 (seven years), then I bought a Tacoma 2007, which was 4 years old at the time. I bought it for $13K. It was MT and the 2.7.

I turned 36 last year and I traded the 07 Tacoma for a 2017. I got $4K on a trade-in with 196K miles. Could have sold it for a lot more I think.

$9K for vehicle that lasted nearly 10 years and is still on the road--that was a great deal.

Paid 18k for mine 22 years ago, now at 568,000, pasted that half million mark and still running strong. I keep thinking about a new
Tacoma but I want to drive 30k miles a year and not worry about the miles on a new truck and be my daily driver. Decisions decisions, mmm

Too many electronics in the new stuff. Granted 1st gens have computers as well. My opinion it will be tuff to manufacture vehicles that are super reliable and still meet Govt, EPA and let’s not forget California standards. Soon 1st Gen registered in California will be required to have stickers that say “known to cause cancer” few years later they will make first gens register for public safety and by 2030 they will be rounded up and destroyed in the name of public safety.

The previous toyota 3.5 V6 engines have earned their reputation of being the most reliable engines in consumer automovie history.

We will see about this Atkinson version. Atkinson mode seems like it will put even less strain on the engine.

I doubt the mechanical parts will fail. It's going to be all the PCBs and other electronic components that won't last.

In my 20's, I would have never have bought the 3rd gen I have now (or any 4wd truck) because payments, fuel and maintenance costs were a significant part of my budget. Even today (I'm 50+), I cringe at paying to fuel up my truck - even though I have the money now. But I kept my 89 Honda Civic to drive if fuel prices get too crazy. I'd say if you are questioning your purchase, you may not be in the right vehicle.

At that point why bother having the king ranch?

To me it's like buying an Armani suit then hanging it your closet and wearing a cheapo suit to work. Wth.

Wow, that's a lot of miles. Cool truck. That was a rare combo, which I think they only made for a couple of years.

The thing is, you have no idea what will be the right car/truck for you over the next 20 years. Two years form now you may be living in a sketchy place where you don't want to park a nice car or two. 5 years from now you might have a 100 mile commute or you may be working from home and barely driving. 7 years from now you might prefer investing in retirement over modding a vehicle. 10 years from now you might have 6 kids to shuttle around. 15 years from now you might want a self-driving vehicle. Today you may be into speed and handling. 8 years from now you might have a boat to haul around. 14 years from now you might be restoring an old house and be going to the home depot 3x a week. 18 years from now the thought of climbing into and out of a Vette may seem like physical agony. So don't overthink this. Buy something you enjoy and can get a lot of value out of, and at the same time realize that buying and selling cars every few years is a financially stupid thing to do.

I believe the 3rd gens will last well over 200000. As long as the proper maintenance is done why not!!

I bought this truck with the intention that it be the last vehicle I'll ever buy. I'm 56 years old so if it lasts me 20 years I should be good. My family tends to live longer than 76 years but I should probably not be driving after that.

My 2002 Tundra lasted fourteen years and never had to go into the shop once for any issues and I expect the same from this truck.

If I had the space and money I'd want a first gen Tundra as a secondary vehicle so badly.

Only if it's stanced and you have a hoonigan/illest sticker on it. Plenty of us in our 30s who grew up in compact imports can still drive them without kids asking if that's our kid's car.

My dad bought a new Toyota "pick-up" in 1993. Before they were called Tacomas. He Still owns it and over the years has made it into an offroad beast. Everytime he drives it a note gets left on his windshield asking to call if its for sale. He has been offered over $15,000 for it as its sits. It currently has dents and scratches all over it, 300,000 miles on it. People see toyota and know they will run forever. I just bought my first truck (2016 trd off road) after owning a high performance BMW and love this truck already. My youngest son who is 9 is already talking about how it will be his truck when he turns 16. I told him we'll see..
