Third gen, TRD learning curve

Have owned 2010 and 2015 SR5 ACs, and ten days ago bought a TRD ORSB. The truck intrigues me, even though I doubt I’ll do little, if any, sort of off-road driving. I like the ride, but maybe still learning to drive optimally with the AT and realize there are some ins and outs with this vehicle that need learning. For example, S mode: Is it all useful? Was put there for a reason, no? Of course, there are the apps, ECT, the OR stuff and whatnot. Any stories on what you learned early on in how best to drive and use these trucks, which have a little different technology than past versions? Tips or tricks? Thanks.

 

some people here including me drive with ECT on, makes the truck more peppy, IMO. some people including me have installed the mod that turns on ECT when you start the truck.
before i installed the mod i drove in S mode and shifted when i wanted it to shift.

 

Drive it like you stole it. It will be fine. These trucks need higher revs to do good.

I got mine near the beginning of the year. I have 17K on it already lol. I drive it hard and often, which is why I got a Toyota truck. Reliability and durability.

 

I agree to an extent. I definitely don’t baby it. I rarely use ECT. I feel like the transmission started to shift much better in the 15-20,000 mile range. Either the truck has trained me or the learning software is finally working. The only time I feel like it lacks power is on the freeway trying to maintain 80 mph up hills or against strong headwinds. I live at 7k ft elevation, I’m sure it would be perfect at sea level.

 

Use s mode to select how much power your transmission needs to make. I.e. hills. Down shift to make more power. Upshift when you reach your desired speed. Seems basic but some have a hard time with it and get upset when the truck feels "under powered".

Also, this truck is made to work in high RPM. This is 4th in my MT and pulls great with not over working anything

For sure. They can be a hand full. They do need a solid 30 minutes a day of fetch or playing. But we have a 4 year old nephew and they are obsessed with him. They just follow him around the House

Not sure if mentioned but I use S4 when towing along with ECT on.
Like someone else said, it also took me about 12-15k miles to finally feel like the truck understands me or I understand it lol. To tow you'll have to rev the heck out of it to get going other than that I don’t drive the rpms up at all I stay below 2k rpms and get 18-19mpg’s with 285’s.

 

I have a 2018 & pretty much always use ECT. Drives fine without just the RPM's tend to be a little too low for my liking in daily traffic. Seemed to do better once I hit the 1200 mile mark but was never terrible.

Thought for sure I was going to have to buy the shift sense pro after reading post after post of this kind of stuff. For the most part I think Toyota has improved the AT since the 16's & 17's

 

And they open doors. And they can climb to places that amaze you, even for a cat. And they're incredibly smart and wily and the dose of wildcat DNA that they have in them hasn't had thousands of years of selective breeding for behavior/temperament.

They're crazy effing cats is what I'm saying.

S Mode is useful for towing since it can limit you to 4th gear. 5th and 6th are overdrive gears and should never be used for towing. Read your manual, this is all in there.

 

I've heard Bengal cats can roam for miles. I know some people keep them inside but they're so energetic it might be worth considering whether you have land for them to explore.

 

Here's a tip that I've been using a lot, while holding the lock button press the unlock button twice. This will disable the signal for the key FOB. I do this when I goto the beach or go running, I take the key out of the fob and throw the fob and lock it in the glove compartment. That way I don't have to worry about it getting wet or carrying crap while I run. One of the service reps showed me this. It's a cool trick

 

press any button lock or unlock, and it goes back to normal

 

Never. Never let a Bengal free roam outside. Extremely bad idea. The only time I've ever seen a Bengal outside was when it was walked on a leash to a large enclosure.

 

What happens when you do let them roam free?

 

Curious when you say this truck is made to work in high RPMs is this something that has been stated by Toyota or just from your knowledge? Do you have anything to prove this? Not trying to ask in a negative way at all just really want this statement to be true to make myself feel better and wondering if there was solid facts stating this.
