just pulled the wheels to rotate tires and noticed all 4 brake pads are really worn with 40K miles. I drive a manual and I’m real easy on pads. Was easily getting double that on a Silverado 4x4 over the last 20 years. Just wondering others’ experience. Here are pics of the front pads and some grooves already showing in my rotor. 9A9E8558-E9C3-462E-8AF2-50CBA51059C7.jpg2C2C9514-B6AB-48D9-8FFD-6A861256BA9B.jpg BED68212-037B-4EBC-891B-9632246CCA53.jpg

I haven't actually looked at it myself, but I am getting my pads replaced at 50k mile service. They were at 4mm according to the dealer, which is when they recommend changing them.

See if you can put ceramic pads. Ceramic ones should last longer.

I change mine out at 40-50k, typically. Fortunately, Toyota pads are some of the easiest to change out. Couple pins, push the pads/pistons in, new pads in, done.

I am at 78000 miles with original pads and drum brakes on a 2011. Still have about 4-5mm left on the front pads

Dealership told me I need to replace the pads on my rear drums and I only have 15k miles... Said there was only 5 mm left on the pads. I mostly drive highway too

Something is not right there. This should be covered under warranty. I know everyone has different driving habits, but these rear pads shouldn't wear out that early. Most of the vehicle weight is upfront. Rear brakes should outlast the front, always.

This used to be pretty well set in stone. I traditionally replace rear brakes at the same time I replace the front the 2nd time. But some vehicles with traction control are wearing out rear brakes faster than normal. 15K seems way too early. But it isn't unusual anymore to see front and rear wear out at about the same time.

I figured as much. I kind of looked at the guy like o_O seriously? .I'll probably wait until they squeak before I even consider replacing them . Even when I do I'll probably just do them myself.

Chevy 1500’s and Tahoe’s have very hard pads. I have had over 120k miles on two Tahoe’s without doing the front brakes. When you do have to replace them, you also have to replace the rotors due to wear. Just different design ideas but both work.

Interesting thought. I have 20 years of Chevy disk measurements in my toolbox. Will measure and compare when I get a minute to swap pads and resurface rotors.

I did learn that Chevy rotors wear out in less than a day if you’re a few beers in while teaching your teenage daughter to do a brake job and she slaps a pad in backwards. I think the guys at the parts house are still telling that story.

Looks like there's plenty of life left on those pads. And 5mm is like half worn. 2-3mm is replace time.
