I recently purchased a Blackvue DR590-2CH for my taco. I thought I'd try and use the GoPro mount since, well, it's there. :)

    I discovered a few things:
    1. The Taco has a honkin' fat mirror mount (probably for the tss camera).
    2. The Blackvue wants to mount with the lens next to the mirror mount, thus blocking the left side of the camera view.
    3. To mount it so not to block camera view, it's backwards thus inverting your video (not a big issue). <edit> firmware now allows you to flip primary camera recording in addition to rear.
    4. There were no 'quality' alternate mount solutions out there.
So, like another well known poster here, I made something because it doesn't exist. I'm footing the bill for the few first prototypes, but wonder if anyone has any thoughts on this design.

Basically, it'll mount to the GoPro shoe that slots into the GoPro mount. It takes 2 decent o-rings to loop around. The cutouts will allow the o-rings to transit the inner diameter a little bit and provide sufficient friction to hold the Blackvue from moving around. The sleeve itself is probably 0.5mm or less, larger than the Blackvue. So it should be a pretty decent fit.

Thoughts anyone? Or am I just way overthinking this and should just slap that supplied sticky mamma up there?

Why not use the 3M sticky tape like the rest of the world and put the camera outta sight behind the mirror..??
It will be centered that way also..

I have been searching all over. I want a small dash cam something the size of the Go Pro Session that mounts to the go pro mount in out trucks. I don't want a lot of feature, Autostart with ignition and auto off (not motion detection on/off) I just want it to record when I drive, not wile parked. Basically so when someone blows a stop sign or red light and hits you, the proof is there!! You would think this would be able to find!

They are out there. Just limit your search by dollar value.

I think a lesser version of my Blackvue would do what you’re asking.

I want to mount up where that Go Pro mount is. If the go pro mount comes off without any problems, then any camera that tucks up there neatly would be fine. I don't care about price, kist that it is neat, small amd clean looking

Let me send you some photos of what I did. I'd be happy to share my 3D file with you as well. I think the final printed copy was about $12 online? I probably spent $35 on prototyping. It's pretty clean and I did go through the trouble of getting a power monitor so I don't have to worry about draining my battery. My unit records continuously when the truck is on. In park mode it's continuously watching on loop, and will write out video when it detects motion or shock. I think it goes back 15 seconds in those situations. I didn't spring for the wifi model, but did purchase a lightning to SD card reader. Haven't tried it out yet. If I had realized I was going to buy one of those, I would have sprung for wifi as it was about 35% of the cost difference. I have the two camera setup. I'm thinking the wifi would have value in being able to check on the darn thing once a week just to make sure it's working. Nothing worse than a thief in the house and you pull out your empty gun.

See above :) I ended up 3D printing a sleeve to hold my Blackvue camera. The mount worked out pretty well. The one design flaw is that the camera wants to be 'the other way around' in the mount which would make the wires wrap to the far side and put the lens closer to the centerline. Bad, and good. But mostly bad with this mount. If I put the lens closer to the centerline, I'd get shadowing by the mirror mount... the mirror's footprint on the windshield is pretty big. And, I'd have to run cable a little farther and have it come out in a more obvious place. As I mounted it, it comes out close enough to the centerline and the cables are near invisible. So, when I'm viewing footage I have to flip it in software since the camera is upside down. It's not a big deal, just a click of a button.

I'll try and post some pics this evening.

Thanks RushT. Neat and clean is what I am looking for. I don't even need rear camera, just front. 2018 is hard because of that TSS thing they have in the windshield that takes up all the room.

Okay, so here are some photos. I didn't think to get one from the driver's seat. If I do so tomorrow, I'll edit this post. You can actually see the rear camera too; I haven't buried the cord yet, but the slack will go back up over the headliner.

    First pic, closeup from outside
    Second pic, distance outside
Third and fourth pics, closeup inside

It's not what you would call discrete. But it is a clean install. In the second pic you can see how big the footprint is for this mirror. In theory, I could use this mount as a proof of concept, and redesign with an offset to put the camera wherever I wanted. I honestly don't notice it anymore.

It turns out I don't need the O-rings I bought. The sleeve is just snug enough that it holds the camera tight enough to not worry about it. We'll see how it does when Texas hits 105 this summer. I had the sleeve printed out of nylon using SLS technique. It does have a little bit of texture to the surface, but it's pretty smooth. You can see the edges that make up the circle. Thats mostly a function of the free software I used for designing. The teeth you see on the camera in pic 4 are for it's mount. It has a collar with a 3M sticky designed to go on the windshield.

Now that is what I am talking about! That mount looks like it came with the camera. I wish the camera was a little shorter left to right. I don't know much about that camera, but why are there 2 cables coming out of it? Shouldn't there only be one for power?

One line is power, as you surmised. The second line is the video feed from the rear camera. There's actually a third input if I wanted to add an external gps to log location along with my video. My original design was longer and covered more of the camera. It had a collar on one end to 'stop' the camera when I slid it in place. In the end, I just went minimalist.

I agree, the camera was a little larger than I expected, but I didn't want to start my search all over again. The rear camera is about a third the size of this. I actually considered reversing the mounts and putting the front in the back and the back in the front. I'd have to buy some power extensions though. Not enough power cord to get from the back to the fusebox.

If you think about it, I could roll the mount up about 150 degrees by loosening the screw, but it would get into the tint up there. I suspect that once summer gets here and I get a little more free time, I may do a redesign of the sleeve that puts it closer to the headliner by rolling up as I indicated. I'd have to have it offset just a little more though, to keep it out of the tint.

Here's a screen grab from the website. Relative size to each other is correct. You can see the collar I took off the large front camera.

I'm going to necro bump this. I'm using your mount, but I just installed tonight. Are you saying I need to invert to get better clearance from the tss radar?

I love the idea! The only reason I haven’t bought a blackvue up until now is because I too want to use the supplied GoPro mount. I have a ‘17 so no TSS, do you think this will allow me to install the blackvue properly? (Not upside down)
