I literally hate the GPS and voice activation system. The GPS routing guide sucks. My several year old Garmin Nuvi is aggravating at worst, but the Toyota's system is horrible.

In the middle of a phone call the system updates with guidance, (not a bad thing), but the volume is above of the phone call and most of my experiences have been that it is just informing me to continue down the same stretch of highway. I'd like to be able to program it to have a lower volume than my phone call.

The second thing item, and I experienced it yesterday was it does not forewarn when approaching a turn or the destination location on the right or left...

The final thing is how it handles calling people programmed in my phone- "calling the home of ...." and it might pull up several people with the same name b/c it looks at all the same last names even though I have requested a person's full name.

Anyone know if these things can be altered to user preference? I hate to go back to using my Garmin, but at this rate I might have to do that.

    Thanks-

    YDP

I think you can adjust the GPS voice volume in the menu, but don't ask me how....

The voice recognition is ridiculous. I get so mad at it sometimes that I start cussing at it! I also love when it is giving you directions, it does not mute the radio, so you cannot hear what it says. The sound system sucks as well.

If you have an IOS phone you can use Siri to make your calls and other things. Just press and hold the top phone button on the wheel until she beeps. I can just say "Call mom" or "Call Dale" or "Call my sister". I have two sisters so she'll ask "Would you like to call Tammy or Martie?" Siri is smarter than the stock assistant and more customizable. I never even bother with the apps. Just ask Siri for a weather forecast or whatever. I also have all my tunes on my phone and an apple music subscription so Siri takes care of my music too.

The biggest downside to this truck, no question. If anyone has a good solution, I'm in for a fix also.

They are going to start using it next year I think in the Tacos. This year in the Avalon. I hope we'll be able to switch out the head units to use in our older trucks. From what I've read Toyota had security issues with Carplay and was afraid it phones home too much information. They are working it out.

You can control volume of assistant. I have her turned down really low.

You think there will be an option to update the pre 19' models to Carplay/entune 3.0?

I seriously wish you could get cars w/o all the in dash BS. I don't want the big display or Navi, it all goes out of date and ends up looking dated in 3 years. My wifes 2013 Kia display looks like Playskool designed it.

Might just be easier to get a new headunit that supports it like an alpine or something that can retain the usbport and the steering wheel controls

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
Look at it this way-- the screens have a limit as to how big they can get. Gotta see out of the windshield!
On second thought --maybe not as the self driving vehicles are coming--who needs to see out?

I can see it now. On a nice leisurely trip to Phoenix. Car on auto-pilot. I nod off and miss the screen warning. "Your operating system will now shut down for a mandatory update" Fade to black...

There is an eBay market for your 'old' unit.
