    Hi All,

I'm a new first time Tacoma owner. I've got a 2018 Tacoma Double Cab Long Bed, SR5 V6 4x4. I want to add running boards, not nerf bars or oval tube steps but regular straight flat running boards. I see the Toyota accessory part for a 2018 Tacoma is Cast Aluminum Running Boards Part Number: PT76735160 with an MSRP of $750.00. I've read somewhere, possibly on this forum, that the second generation Tacoma running boards will also fit the third generation Tacomas. I see the Toyota accessory part for a 2015 Tacoma (last of the second generation) is Running Boards Part Number: PT21235055 with an MSRP of $386.00, a significant savings.

I called two of my local Toyota dealer parts departments today to inquire about the part numbers, prices and interchangeability. Looks like I've got the right part numbers and pricing. As far as interchangeability I hit a brick wall. Both parts guys said that since the part numbers were different that indicates that they are different parts for the specific model years. When I said that I heard that second generation running boards fit third generation Tacomas, they doubted that was possible. One said that he had no information on interchangeability and would not recommend trying it. The other claimed that the cab on the third generation was totally different than the cab on a second generation and therefore the second generation running boards would not fit on a third generation Tacoma. While I am no expert, to me the cabs appears the same, at least in any way that might affect the running boards.

Is there a Toyota mechanic or anyone else out there who has first-hand experience or knowledge as to whether the second generation Tacoma running boards will fit on a third generation Tacoma? And if so, is it a direct swap (i.e. no extra drilling or other parts, etc.)? Is this job someone like me (not very mechanical and a low threshold for patience) can handle in my driveway with basic tools?

Your knowledge and experience would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Yes they do. I have them on mine. The only thing you have to do is loosen one if the bolts on the running boards so you can orient one of the brackets to point a different direction. It requires no mods or extra parts and fits securely 100%. Saved a fortune

I attached an old file since it's dark and not going outside. Those are the running boards you're talking about?

Thanks so much for your response and confirming this for me. So I'll just have to reposition one of the brackets, if I understand you correctly. And all that entails is loosening the bolt, moving it in the correct orientation and re-tightening the bolt? Sounds simple enough. Thanks again.
