Oil filter clusterfuck

    Ok,,,I have seen 3 or 4 different oil filters for our 2017 4cyl.

    Dealer sold us some 90915-YZZG2 first few oil changes. Which was different from what came on it from factory.

    Then the dealer sold us a
    $54 90915-YZZD3 Oil Filter 1 Case (QTY 10)
    90915-YZZD3. Which one parts guy said is wrong, the next one we talked to said is ok. Got his name...running the filter now.

    And I ordered a 10 pack of
    $58 90915-YZZD1 Oil Filter 1 Case (QTY 10)
    90915-YZZD1 off Amazon as anyplace I look online including the official toyota parts site and their oil filter pdf chart says that is the correct filter.

    WTF is up with this crap??? Why so many different filters that seem to be ok to run???

    I use the YZZD3(big filter) on my 2.7l, I think the YZZD1 is what it came from he factory with, its no biggie the YZZD3 will fit and work fine

    The D1 is the correct filter specified by Toyota for your I4.
    The G2 is not a spec'd part although it may fit (and work) just fine, I don't know.
    The D3 filters are not spec, they are oversize in length but they do fit the base. Kinda like the
    $9 motorcraft FL910S motorcraft - oil filter (FL910S)
    motorcraft FL910S (spec) and FL400 (oversize, fits fine).
    This is probably why the 2nd parts guy said the D3 is "OK"

    Why is this so difficult LOL. I about drove to the dealer to wring some part monkey necks today but I couldn't as I had drained all my oil before realizing I may not have the right filter. WTF very frustrating when you get 2 different answers from 2 different parts guys. Their excuse..."we dont get many 4cyl tacos around here" my reply..."do I need to drive up there and show you how to do your jobs?"

    You can use a D1 or D3. The D3 is slightly longer so it will hold SLIGHTLY more oil than the D3 so you may see the oil level a hair low when you fill with the correct amount of oil. Honestly you may not even notice. The D1 is the correct spec but running a D3 for an oil change wont hurt anything.

    I use the d1 on my 4 banger.
    I use Dino oil and change it often.
    If I was using a syn oil and changing not as often I’d look at a bigger filter. Guess my thought is it’s not just the oil but how well it’s cleaned/filtered.
    Unsure if the bypass pressure is the same etc.
    I buy by the case on Amazon also just got a new case of filters for the taco and the suby.

    Dealer also sold me some G2s for my first few changes. I am running D1s now. I did a little research and my understanding is that the G2 is the same filter except the O ring isn't greased.

    but toyota is already spec'ing the 2016+ 2TR-FEs with the D1 filter and 10k oil change interval.

    Like most other have said, D1 is the correct filter, D3 will work as well, though not necessary on this engine. Seems like the D3 is spec'd for the bigger engines, they probably need more flow, thus more filter area for less restriction.

    The only difference is that the O-ring isn't greased? Well then, surely it deserves a different part number!

    What the F is with these engineers sometimes?

    iv Never had an issue of any sort with OEM oil filters

    most manufacturers would never warranty an engine with a iffy oil filter

    while endurance racing over the year we used to cut them to inside...............
    found good media
    seldom found much else

    there are several threads of a few guys that BUY Aftermarket filters
    Test them
    cut em open
    measure the media ( media does AL the work )............... most have far less than OEM media

    there is marketing
    hype
    retail
    etc
