Flew to Minnesota last week to pick up our new westie Cricket, Butzi our French bulldog still isn't to sure about her. He normally loves everyone, people or dogs but he is not to happy about this decision so far.

Picked up, tossed around and knocked over a bunch of boxes flying around the house (he loves to shred cardboard), then spotted a squirrel outside.

Thank you! I'm excited for the pup to mature a little more. Can't wait to see how she looks at 1 year.

Agreed. Unless you want to train the shit out of your dog and also know what your doing a Mal probably isn’t the way to go. Don’t get me wrong there are some Mals that would be fine for the average person. But for everyone one of those there is probably 30 that people try and rehome because they bit off more than they could chew.

    Mals

They’re a whole new level of wide open and need constant work and training

My Dutchie is a lazier version and he gets 30-45 minutes of training and exercise every hour or two from 7am until dark and it doesn’t even begin to slow him down

A mal or Dutchie really requires a strong handler who’s experienced with high drive, smart, energetic dogs...I’d be in way over my head if my girlfriend wasn’t a former K9 handler

I honestly had no idea how much work they are

Our next door neighbor had a Mal. They are retired, we can see into their back yard from one of our windows, I am pretty sure every single time I glanced into their back yard, he was throwing the chuck it for it. I don't think most people know quite the work they are.

    Wow! good to know.
I've been warned and again, understand what kind of drive a Weim has...
But was interested in a Mali for that drive but maybe too much....
I've had a German Shepard, and thats why the Mali interests me as well.
    Thanks!

Dang how do you work the dog that much during the day? My hunting dog gets morning and nightswhen I’m teachong, more in the summer. I’ve been looking in to A Dutchie for a while now. Do you do any sport or bite work?

I work from home and can spread my day out accordingly to accommodate him

I don’t do any sport or bite work...just good manners and such as he’s a rescue pet and basically a giant cuddling lap dog that murders tennis balls...a ball usually lasts a couple days before I have to replace it

We got him in May, and are currently working on his leash manners and actually responding to commands when they’re given...he’s extremely headstrong but not overly dominant...today is working on properly heeling and placing while walking and coming to a stop

I'd add too that it's not so much physical exercise (although that is equally important), but they require mental stimulation as well. Running a dog like that all day will only get you so far. Tiring them out mentally is key. Same goes for just about any working breed. They are awesome dogs though. Hope to have a GSD in the near future. Been researching dogs for eons it feels like.
