B4E06B76-FD08-4D5E-BD23-CB8805E88FDB.jpg What’s up guys. I’m out of Raleigh and heading up to the Asheville area the weekend after next for a spartan race and I’m looking for a nice primitive camp spots preferable for the beaten path. Does anyone have any suggestions? The sad thing is I grew up in waynesville, never realized was a great place for wheeling it was. Picture for attention.

For primitive camping we would be here all day. My favorite spots are Black Balsam (black balsam knob road in your gps) or Turkey Pen if you’re south of Asheville.

If you know what you’re looking for, let me know and I can send you some more specific recommendations

Are you talking about going up and coming out onto Max patch? Or the road that loops around back down onto hurricane?

If I’m not completely mistaken here, they shut down all of those side trails with the exception of the one that takes you to the bog on the north end of the trail. Too many drunk rednecks tearing up all the side trail. It’s a shame

I’m specifically looking for somewhere I can camp and utilize my rtt. I thought about black balsam but was under the impression that it was hike in camping only.

Ohhhh okay I gotcha now. So both of those I recommend are out.

You can go to MM 7 on I-40 out to Harmon Den. There’s a ton of camping out there and it’s pretty isolated so you won’t likely see many people. Decent fishing and your right next to max patch (which is beautiful) and Hurricane Creek trail that you can run in your truck. Pretty easy trail with some moderate obstacles. That’s all about 45 mins west of AVL.

If you go south of Asheville (google map Mills River Rec area), you’ll turn into N Mills River Rd and that will take you to the main campground, keep straight until the road turns to gravel and stay on that road until you find a good camping area. There are literally 50-75 sites along that road. Also, along that road are some awesome hiking and biking trails as well as good fishing holes

Stop in any outfitter in Asheville and get a Pisgah ranger district map. On the north side of the map you’ll see the area I’ve screen shot for you. That road is the one with all the roadside sites and the map will show you all the trails as well as the river if you fish

Absolutely. I’ve hiked all those trails in WNC so any questions you have let me know. I’ve got all the maps on my phone app so I can screen shot anything you need. Godspeed my friend

No lift, just standard base model 2011 vintage 4x4 with skid plate.

Will i be ok without a lift since you have been on the trail recently?

There is one hole close to the interstate that you may bottom out on. Aside from that you’re good

Yep, Wesley Creek rd. turns into gravel. Not far from there is Bear Wallow Gap which is the hanging meadow you see in all of the YouTube videos.

Google Earth is your friend. ;)
