Looking to upgrade my wheels and tires in the next few months but I can’t figure out what wheel specs I need. Looking at either 265/70R16 (like on the TRD Pro or OF) or 265/65R17 (like on the TRD Sport) tires so not larger than stock, but not sure on backspacing and offset for wheels to keep the tires from rubbing. Help would be very much appreciated.

    Depends...
Backspace clears the inside; rub has more to do with poke/stance.

What widths are you looking at?
    Lifted?
Do you want OE stance or wider stance?

No lift, and I would like to go a touch wider with the stance as long as it won’t rub.

    How much wider?
    What width 7, 7.5, 8, 9...?
    It makes a difference.

    Your current tire/wheel is 245/75/16/16"x7" et +25mm, 5" backspace.

Here's a link for an offset calculator.
It'll calculate new wheel and tire stance and wheel backspace.
The backspace calculation is inaccurate though; just add 1/2" to whatever it gives you.
Keep backspace to 5" or less for inside clearance. I recommend increasing tire stance to 1.5" or less(depending on use) to avoid rubbing and increasing scrub radius too much

    I was planning on 8”

Basically I want a 265 width tire on an 8” wide wheel. Does it make a difference whether it’s a 16” or 17” wheel?

Popular offsets for 8" widths are -12, 0, +12 offsets...
    Example;
    A 16x8 et 0mm, gives you 4.5" backspace; you're good there.
Tire stance will increase by almost 1.5"; good chance of rubbing, depending on your use.
8" width, negative offset will decrease backspace and increase stance.
8" width, positive offset(limit of +12mm to get minimum 5" backspace) will increase backspace and decrease stance.

The 'problem' with 8" width wheels, if you don't want 'a lot' of stance, is hardly any one offers positive offset; mostly 0 and negative numbers
You can do a 7" or 7.5" with reduced positive offset from OE; problem here is, few offer this choice outside of TRD.

Find some wheels you like the looks of and just start plugging them into the calculator.

So I may be better off sticking with a 7” wide wheel? It doesn’t have to be 8” wide. So I should look for a 16x7 with 4.5” of backspace?

With your two tire choices, no.

Not necessarily...and finding wheels with those specs are hens teeth.
How much increased stance do you want to go and how much stuffed and locked wheeling do you do?

Not too much wheeling. Never really have any wheel stuffed up and turned to lock. Mainly just driving on the beach. And I would like to bump the stance out an inch or so.

Edit: looking at tire prices, I think it’s worth sticking with a 16” wheel for now. So will a 265/70R16 on a 16x8 with 4.5” BS rub?

And I hope I’m not being too difficult. I’m just used to buying tires for my ‘93 Ford Bronco. I fit 33x12.5 BFG KO2s on 15x10s with no lift. The intricacies of picking wheels and tires for a midsize truck is a little lost on me still.

    Should be good.
Tire will poke 1" and you have more than enough backspace clearance. I goofed on the 1.5" poke in my previous post.
Now, whether the wheel you chose has the caliper clearance with the spokes...you can't really decipher from backspace. But it's usually more of a problem with steel wheels.

You can fit both of those tires just fine with any wheel really.
Now if you want to get a stance, with 265’s you’ll need at least -15mm offset or smaller but with a spacer.

So I know this is an thread of mine but I decided on 16x8 Pro Comp 7031s (wife’s pick surprisingly. She explicitly stated she likes the faux bead lock look) with 4.5” BS and 265/70R16 Toyo A/T IIs. More hours and research said it looks good with no rub.

Well, the wife did her normal thing and changed her mind. Anybody ever use the Raceline 931B wheels? Specs are the same as the Pro Comp 7031s except the hub bore is 106.1 so no hub ring will be required. Anyone ever run these or have trouble with them?
