I remember reading somewhere a while ago that the stock plastic fan actually does a very good job of moving air compared to some aftermarket fans. Is there a CFM figure for the stock fan?

Not that I know of. The problem with a clutch fan is even fully locked up it is limited by engine idle rpm. It can move crazy amounts of air when you increase engine rpm depending on if and how you mod it.

I wonder if you can change pulley sizes for more fan speed at idle. Then you'd have to worry about it over spinning at higher engine speed... Maybe a magnetic clutch like the A/C pump? Doesn't it disengage at like 3000 rpm to keep the compressor safe?

The one I’m looking at puts out 962 cfm

The one I have now says 1750 but there is NO WAY lol

You think the single spal pusher will make a difference or should I go 11” spal and a 9” on the drivers side ?

    Workin' on it....
    Repost from another thread.

“Any of you guys track your trans fluid temp with an Ultragauge/Scangauge?

I noticed coming back from Tucson my trans temp for a short period of time was hovering around 226F before settling at 212F with an ambient temp of about 115 F.

Are any of you guys running larger radiators, extra electric radiator fans or larger than the regular OEM tow package trans coolers?”

Didn’t really get much input in the AZ thread so just throwing this in here.

What kind of cost for the radiator & install would I be looking at to have a shop do this (ballpark)?

The radiator is $350 and you can do the install yourself if you are remotely handy. I have a Tru Cool 1142 that I am going to be installing below the condenser and I will be removing the factory external cooler.

I’ve installed all my own UCA / suspension and such.

Never messed with brake lines or coolant lines yet - should this be doable without too much grief for me?

I have a aftermarket trans cooler and it has never been over 200. Usually stays around 160-170 degrees

It's really super easy. Even easier if you get an FJ shroud and reservoir tank.
    Drain coolant
    Unbolt fan but dont remove
Unhook trans cooler line clamp from shroud
    Reposition lines outside of clamp
    Unbolt shroud
Push upper part of shroud toward engine with one hand and grab fan with the other
Pull fan just off threads and lift shroud up. You will have to move it side to side a bit to clear coolant hoses
    Remove fan
    Remove shroud
    Disconnect coolant lines from rad
Disconnect trans cooler lines from rad (only a little will come out
    Remove two lower rad bolts
    Loosen two upper rad bolts
Hold rad while removing the remaining two bolts
    Lift out rad
See page one for shroud modification if re-using shroud
    Install in reverse order
    Fill coolant
    Check trans servicing

    Bam

I'm also from AZ, with a similar truck as you. Using scangauge. I got rid of the factory trans cooler and installed a B&M 70264. It has made some improvement but not as much as I was thinking it would, only 3-6 degrees cooler than with the factory cooler. Now I usually see 180 on the highway in 110 degree weather. With the factory cooler was seeing 185.

212 seems a little bit higher than expected. What was your water temp? Were you towing and how fast were you driving?

Why didn’t you keep the factory cooler? I have been thinking about ditching th factory cooler for a much larger single cooler

185 is a great temp for the trans. That is not too hot.

Engine temp read out between 190-200, trans temp between about 205-212. Not towing anything. Truck has extra weight with front and rear steel plate bumpers, steel skids, sliders, bed rack. Rims are SCS F5 alloys and tires are 265-75R16 in C-load to keep rotational mass down.

Truck has 66k miles on it, transmission was just drained and filled by Toyota earlier this year. Coolant is full, looks ok, but I've never done a radiator flush I don't think.....cruising speed was between 70-80 mph

Is that temp consistent across a broad ambient range? Probably past time for a flush. You dont want to wait for obvious symptoms like a boil over to let you know. At that point you're already doing harm. If it doesn't help then it lets you know that temp is normal but if it does then you should consider a more frequent flush schedule. My last truck I bought used at 35k and should have flushed it right away, would have saved me a bunch not much later.
