I realize that our Tacoma’s do not have an electronic aux fan. Has anyone done this in addition to the mechanical fan?

As hot as it is here in Phoenix and to help my AC blow colder air, I am thinking of adding an auxiliary fan. Any pointers?

Have you looked into changing the fluid in the fan clutch to have it kick on sooner to help out

Change the viscous fluid in the fan clutch? Is that possible? Link?

Yes you can remove the fan clutch and replace the fluid with thicker stuff. I'll find a link. Just did it to mine because at idle my a/c sucked.

That kit is a uses a thermostat to activate the aux fan. That's not really what you want if the goal is better AC at idle. You want to trigger the relay with at AC compressor clutch instead.

Even with the aux fan, part of the issue is the low idle RPM the compressor is not pumping enough refrigerant.

Fan isn’t the problem it’s the a/c, something needs service, mine blows ice cubes!, if the fan clutch were a issue the truck would overheat. Obviously thats not why you started the thread. It should be pressure tested, and if it holds, they vaccum the lines and make sure it holds vac, then they might need to top off the r134, no biggie.

First time I’ve heard of this mod. May have to look into it. My black truck in the FL sun suffers at idle for A/C temps. Takes quite a while to cool at idle. And since I added my supercharger, my water temps have gone up 3-5 degrees at idle.

If that is the case. My A/C blows ice cold at 100 degrees to. Can't compare how an A/C system in LA works to one in Phx Az At 118 degrees.

there is what is refered to as the "green" fan clutch for Tacomas. Some call it the HD or towing package fan clutch. It is a direct replacement for the stock one. I am not sure if there is a different fan or not. One would think with all of the Toyota pickups in the middle east that they would know about extreme heat and cooling.

"The Toyota dealer says there are three types of viscous fan clutch silicone. They are rated at 3000 CST, 6000 CST, and 10,000 CST. (the higher the Cst rating, the higher the viscosity (THICKER fluid) All priced the same. The only reference to this stuff that the Toyota parts jock could find, was a TSB from 1975 specifying the fill procedure for the clutches of that year, The 3,000 Cst. was for all Toyotas except for the Celica (the only “sporty” car they offered in 1975), which got 6,000 Cst. The 10,000 Cst. was not assigned an application by the TSB. He guessed maybe the Land Cruiser but didn't really know. Anyway, the part numbers are 08816-03001, 08816-06001, and 08816-10001, respectively.(Each bottle is 18mL; you will probably need 2-3 bottles depending on your specific fan clutch)"

I live in the high desert near LA, and we get to 120* and I’ve taken lazer readings of the asphalt whilst sitting in LA traffic jams and between the cars in front of me at 125-130* with a lazer, then cars are blowing hot exhuast directly into my radiator, and the ground reading 150* in LA. The Antelope Valley is so much like AZ, 9% rh and temps hit 110-120 since I was born here 40 years ago. Do yourself a flavor and run defrost in the winter to keep the compressor lubed for optimal performance during summer, its the lack of maintenance between seasons and high/low temps that hurt you’re system. I need to knock on wood because my a/c is awesome after servicing it ten years ago, and I’m talking nipple show, lol. Seriously though, during winter, cycle that system for reliability during the summer because the lack of lube ruins compressors all day. Does the system blow even a little bit of cold air? The vents even blow air? Thanks, we’ll get her figured out, you have team backing. My friends in Phoenix AZ had issues just like you until they fixed the a/c and started to listen about winter cycling, you can do it just by running defrost.
