Composite bed. It’s normal and there isn’t much you can do about it. Every Tacoma with a rack of topper I’ve seen has this condition.

Do you mount stuff on your bed rails?
Have you pulled the caps to see if metal is splitting?

Haven't pulled the caps off yet. Only thing I ever have on the rails is the bed rack which only has spare tire treds and maybe a hi lift

I'm just wondering if tying a hammock to the rack will side load it too much and that's what caused it. Only done it 2 or 3 times but not sure.

I usually have a tonneau cover on it was just this weekend went camping so put the rack on and noticed the slightly bigger gap

I don't plan on doing anything to it unless it gets worse and I don't think that would even help. I have the stiffeners and you can see where the part the bolt to is pulling away from the bed side. So pulling on it won't do anything to correct it.

    Could possibly make it worse

Is the gap the same on the bottom of the tailgate compared to the top?Once, I noticed the gap was uneven. Opened the tailgate, shoved it one way, closed, and voila it was perfect. There is some lateral play in the tailgate

Fit and fitment is just getting worse, with the more plastic you add. My 2016 Tacoma new was 3/8 gap on top and 1/8 at bottom of metal on tailgate passenger side. My 2018 isn't as bad. My 2007 has a somewhat consistent gap down both sides and our 2000 is consistent . Went out and checked but the 2016 seemed to have been a built on friday afternoon truck...so Toyota wanted it back......

Each bedside unbolts...why not loosen the side with the larger gap and play with it that way before jumping to conclusions

Its not that, have you ever leaned against the bedside of a 1st gen compared to a 3rd gen? The difference is metal bolted to metal vs metal bolted to plastic. Heck, just park it on the street the wrong way so it leans the other way and it will fix itself.

Aren't you using your turn signal to turn your submarine on? Hope your truck is still doing ok after going for a swim. And yeah, we baby our trucks :). But they're only a couple years old, so they aren't beaters. Comes with the bought brand new territory I think.
