You could probably get a good 75-100k out of that diff fluid. Coolant and brake fluids as well. The only one I would stay on top of is the transmission fluid.

    Lessons I learned today...

#1 even if you're in a hurry use a damper on a recovery strap..
#2 when a septic tank truck gets stuck in your yard, tell them to call a tow truck that it's not your fucking problem.
#3 when you have a perfectly capable HMMWV use that even if it doesn't have air conditioning because it will pull it right out.

Sounds reasonable, but it also depends on the amount of time the fluids are in there. Personally, I change/refresh all my fluids every 3 years. I don't put a lot of miles on, but age and other contaminates that make their way in over time come into play. But, end o' de day, it's up to each to decide what makes most sense for them.

I don't remember if the tacoma trannies have drain plugs but it is pretty simple as draining, refilling and then checking/adding to get up to the proper level. You could drop the pan (slowly, if there is no drain), pull out the old filter, let it drip for a while, clean up the pan, install new filter, button it up, pour in a few quarts before starting it up, then you'll just have to keep checking/adding fluid until you get to the proper level.

I'd highly recommend a funnel like this for the transmission:

If you are talking just a pan drain, it's not bad, but more involved than an oil change or the diff change, but still within the realm of what you can do, just need to be able to read the tranny temp, or set the tranny temp blinker.

If you are talking about a total change, i.e., flush, definitely even more involved. Personally, I don't see the point in that effort if you are doing a pan drain every 30-50k, but that's just me. Tranny fluid needs additive refresh more than a total change since it's not exposed to all those nasty combustion by-products.

2nd gens have pan drain plugs, and the filter is actually nothing more than a screen over the pickup.
