    My perspective...

TW is a good forum imo -for owners, enthusiasts, former owners, potential owners, Ridgeline owners, etc. and I am pretty sure that even people who don't know the color of their trucks can post, lol

I certainly glean good information from this free resource. And after some time, it's pretty easy to figure out who's who -very few Toyota master mechanics here though.

And my truck is quicksand btw....jk

Anyone else notice how the TW 3rd gen forum has improved of late? I would not have expected this thread to make it 4 pages without going off the rails- nice!

from a strictly financial perspective a trailer would be much cheaper than any trade.

Also, I think the 3rd gens aren't great.

I miss my 2nd gen once out of every 80 times I sit in the seat -- scratch that, every once in a while when someone posts a nice MGM 2nd gen I see on the forum. The 2nd gen felt like it had more umph right off the break and I miss the body lines some times. Other than that, I upgraded all day. Don't read or "hear things" about the truck. Take them into consideration after you drive it, then drive it again after you've read about it and see if you notice or care.

I think the 3rd gen looks better with the long bed than the 2nd, I think its more comfortable, the interior is better designed, I enjoy the sun roof, heated seats, navigation, and other creature comforts my last sport didn't have (not to say I couldn't have had them last time), overall happy with the purchase.

TLDR; The point is, make sure you give yourself reasons to make the switch so you enjoy the purchase. Don't go in expecting something you're not going to get out of just moving up to a long bed.

It's a great resource with lot's of knowledgeable people.... and some not so knowledgeable lol. Most people are nice... a few dicks... but all in all a good place to hang out and talk trucks.

I like my 3rd Gen so far. OR with no tech package. It’s not perfect, but really nothing is, Ford (wife drives), Chevy (my work truck) or Toyota (my Toy) I knew purchasing it there was no Super Charger available, that’s my biggest complaint.
Just got to buy what suits your needs, budget and style.

I think some of the complaints are blown out of proportion. I’ve had trans shifting issues but the TSB/reflash really reduces the issues. You need to be a bit aggressive with the pedal as well. I’m not talking from stop to the floor either. Steady constant pressure on the gas pedal and it’ll wind its way through the gears quickly. What I’ve been doing is giving more pressure on the gas at each upshift and it holds gear longer, giving more power. The looks and ride are awesome.

My issues have been the trans and the rear diff howl. Both I consider minor issues which the TSBs have reduced. Coming from an ‘03 Ranger that I drove for 13 blissful years to my ‘16 Taco. The Taco is so much better than my Ranger which I absolutely loved. Loving my Taco as well.

    No regrets here.

You know, I'm glad I didn't read this forum before snagging my 18TRD OR last week.

I just retired a 20 year old Jeep for this truck. Almost went with another Frontier, but, I got a smoking deal... so...

I'm not in love with the trans... but, I'll give it some time. It's not a deal breaker, though, I would certainly prefer a manual.
Power is adequate. If I want to go fast, we have a Charger Daytona parked next it, and of course my bike.

Maybe its just me getting older? I dunno... either way.
I don't DD my truck, I have a company vehicle, so, it'll take a while to rack up miles... put 8k on my Jeep in the last 3 years..

Good lord, another thread about how thw 3rd gen has no power and is riddled with issues. Im on my second 3rd gen and have not had a problem with either. There great trucks and plenty of power. Last time i checked 40 something hp more then my 2015 had.

I even tow my can am x3 with it. Plenty of power. Problems here are mostly due to people not knowing how to drive a truck with 2 over drive gears and or are used to there 2nd gen. Its a completely different drivetrain so guess what it will drive different! Dont be afraid to use the skinny pedal when u need too.

The new tsb ecu update tsb0062-18 (eg1181) fixes the issues.

Holy cow people seem to be super concerned about the integrated manifold. Here is a little secrect, unless you are going to be drastically increasing the powerband rpm on this engine the integrated manifold is actually better than a header ever could be, its already equal length, gets rid of the gasket seam between the head and exhaust header, engine gets up to operating temp faster, there are also emissions benefits but im sure noone here cares about that.
I love my tacoma. Its not without its quirks, I wish front seats were an inch and a half lower, and I was super pissed at toyota for trying to convince me that its stuttering was "working as designed". But they finally released a TSB which fixed the problem. For nearly the same price you can get pretty sweet fullsize truck but i like smaller vehicals. Also, there has never been a better looking truck than a 3rd gen Off Road in quicksand, something about those black flares on FDE body color is so bad ass.

Is pulling a trailer or using a bed extender a option?

I owned a 05 and purchased a 18 in May. The 18 is so much better. I too read so many bad things on here and never found them to be an issue. I just got back from a 4000 mile round trip and the taco performed great. I take the trip every summer and it was so much better with the 18 and the trip goes through the rockies. The 18 has plenty of power and shifts smooth. Be careful of what you read and test one out for yourself, is the best advice I can give.
