Thinking about getting an under coating to protect against rust. Have you done it? Recommendations would be appreciated, best kinds? How much should I invest? How long does it last? Thanks!

I haven't personally used it but the consensus on here seems to be DIY Fluid Film once or twice a year.

I had the dealer undercoat the truck wit a solvent based undercoat. It stays soft and less prone to harding and cracking.

The dealer did it, so very expensive, I remember $600? There use to be places like “Rusty Jones” who also did undercoatings, rustproofing, etc. So shop around for a better price. None around me, I just bit the bullet.

It is a one time application, life of vehicle, some shops offer free annual touch ups.

Half the reason I get undercoating is for the sound deadining.

Maine huh? I feel your pain brother, I'm in Nova Scotia. Rustiest of the rust belt lol.

I had Rust Check (similar to Fluid film) applied at a shop when new and every fall thereafter. It's a petroleum based undercoat, which means it won't harden, crack or plug drain holes. Downside? Only one besides the initial smoke/smell/mess, you have to re-apply every year. It cost me $137 CAD last year.

You're going to hear some say you don't need it at all, but you and I know that's BS if you're living in a heavily salted area and plan on keeping your truck for a while.

    Just my opinion,

    Cheers

I live in Buffalo so its rusty in general over here. I went to a place called 'Carwell' that does the plow trucks and UPS vehicles so they might have a location in your area. I use it once a year (before winter hits after a good wash) and it seems to have stopped what rust started before I sprayed it. It was only 150 and is not a gunky foam. It sounds like what the dealer charges 600 for.
