3,000 miles on my new tacoma and my truck has been chugging and seems confused when holding at 1,200 rpmish going 55ish while just holding that speed... it feels like the truck shouldn't be in 6th great already cause it chugs and bucks like a 5.0 Mustang going 35mph while in 5th gear when you know damn well you should be in 3rd or maybe 4th depending who you are showing off for... any ideas what's going on...? Btw it also has the same chugging at 65mphish while lightly on the pedal holding speed feels like the transmission doesn't know it needs to be in 6th gear or not... I've been driving for over 30 years and never felt this before on a new vehicle... any help would be grateful or should I take it to the dealer...?

Welcome to the forum, I believe that there is a TSB that will help that was just released a week ago.

Not sure but I just drove mine at ~57 mph for 4 hours straight a few weeks back using cruise and no issues here. The truck does like to typically keep rpms low for gas mileage reasons... Personally I would gladly sacrifice the extra 1 mpg for a smoother engine balance but alas... in cruise I couldn't tell, and when I'm not in cruise I just step on the gas when I need or want higher rpms, itll still downshift like any other AT

Edit: I think wind could be a bigger factor if the truck is fighting the wind but also trying to keep rpms low... in that case I'd maybe use sport mode and or ect which will keep it out of OD

I've tried 5g and it takes care of the issue immediately... but it does it at higher speeds as well that's where shifting down is going to make the rpms to high not to mention driving a brand new truck we shouldn't have to worry about downshifting you know what I mean? I'm more concerned if my truck feels like this now at 3,000 miles what it will feel like at 150,000 miles... my son-in-law has a 2007 fourunner with 185,000 miles on it which I just drove across the country roughly 2,600 miles with NO shift issues actually no issues at all perfect ride so my concern is my truck is already having chugging issues when my foot is gently on the pedal holding speed (no wind) I forgot to mention that if I am gradually gaining speed when the tranny feels like it needs to shift down there's a stuttering feeling before it shifts down now if I push the pedal down with some purpose there's no issues whatsoever... like I said I've driven many vehicles in my day so this chugging thing shouldn't be a thing... ps. I'm aware the 2007 fourunner and my 2018 Tacoma are not the same I'm just saying that no issues from a 185,000 Toyota and I already have shifting issues from a Toyota with 3,000 miles I will try the ect button

The Dealer should have the latest TSB info, someone had it posted up here on the forums a week or so ago

Anyone without the TSB claiming there's no issue most likely lives in a flat area. I've noticed mine is worse with the AC on. I'll get it addressed at my next trip to the dealership.
