I a concerned about the “severe knocking.”

Yeah, me too. No oil getting up top so there was probably some minor damage. There has not been any residual noises or issues.

It looks like sludge, see the video below from an FJ Cruiser with same 1GR-FE engine where he used Sea Foam and trans fluid to break up engine sludge and it ended up in his oil pan blocking the oil pump pickup:

Regular oil changes......who knew they'd prevent that sludge?

One of my used engines looked as bad as that. Should have used ATF instead of the Amsoil cleaner.

And let the oil pump chew it up and spit it out into the oil filter where it can be removed. Not perfect, but better than starvation due to screen blockage.

Before mixing in heavy duty solvents, bear in mind that the oil sump design does not allow for complete drainage. The drain plug bung extends upward ~2mm, so you're left with that as your "waterline" during drains. Anything below the waterline isn't coming out, unless you remove the sump and clean it as the guy in the FJ video did. Repeatedly.

My 4Runner had sludge when I bought it as a project, not as bad as yours and the FJ but it was noticeable. I've been running Pennzoil High Mileage 5W-30 at 2000-3000 mile change intervals, and here's what has been caught in the filter.

    Thanks craig1.

Should I remove that part of the oil pan that was shown in the vid you posted? The idea of all of that sludge lying there gives me chills!! It does look like it would be a huge undertaking.
Would this give me access to the sump screen to clean it? I'm sure there is sludge building up again.
I will start using the P-oil high mileage with the larger capacity filter.

With the skidplates off, there is a clear line of sight to the oil sump...not a huge ordeal. And yes, when the sump is removed you're looking right at the pickup tube and screen. Get a new gasket for it and a tube of FIPG sealant for the sump, whip out your accurate torque wrench for reinstalling the bolts correctly, and you've got all you need. Don't try this job without an accurate torque wrench unless you really enjoy leaks at the sump, and possibly loss of oil pressure due to improper pickup tube tightening.

With all that said, I haven't dropped my sump as yet. I do my oil changes with the engine hot and the passenger side wheels on ramps to tilt the entire vehicle toward the oil drain. After the oil has drained and the plug is still out, I also pump a few syringe-fulls of the hot drained oil (after pouring it through the coffee filter) back down the dipstick tube to help push any remaining sludge out of the pan. Can't see what additional sludge comes out the drain, as I'm topside at that time. But when I dump out my oil drain container at the recycling center...there's sludge settled out at the bottom.

    Awesome, thanx!
I have the Fumoto drain set up, so maybe I'll change the oil hot this time.

OK, so I've purchased the yzzd3 filter and PZ high mileage 5W30 oil. Just need a little more clarification before I proceed.
When you refer to the sump, are you referring to an internal part or the removable section of the pan, oil pan #2? Also, there is a gasket for the oil pump pickup tube/strainer assembly, NOT just RTV sealant, correct?

Thanx for all of the help & advice!!

Yes, the sump is the stamped steel #2 oil pan that bolts to the cast aluminum #1 oil pan which is bolted to the block.

Yes, there is a gasket for the oil pump pickup assembly. Never use RTV silicone on oil passages, unless you're hoping to spin a crank or rod bearing.

Thanx SC4333, I plan on switching over to synthetic after a couple of runs on PZ high mileage. Could I use those Fram filters in combination w/PZHM?

Yes, any oil can be used with any filter, they don't discriminate! Lol

Inspect, check and maybe change the Charcoal Canister near the Gas Tank? May have a crack, break, or leaking into fuel to engine?
