Anyone else have a tailgate with a runny nose? Mines dripping snot all over the bumper like it has a cold. I think more likely it has a hot, given the phx temps. I suppose it's lube for the slow-release Sony Tape Deck trick the tailgate does.

My Jetta used to drip snot from the driver door and then one day the window stopped working. Dealer had no idea what was going on, then one day VW execs in Germany said they picked grease that wasn't rated for high temps. This is probably the same thing.

Okay, I'll post pics next time I see. I thought of that only after I wiped it up.

Could be cosmoline: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmoline I don't know if they cover Tacomas with it at the factory but a lot of cars that come by ship have it applied before it goes on the boat to prevent rust. It is supposed to be cleaned off before you get it but sometimes they miss a bit.

I gave the inside of my tailgate (along with the rest of the truck) a heavy coat of Fluid Film. In hot weather with the sun shining on the tailgate, it drips out of the drain holes onto the bumper.

I've seen it on mine and its only a few weeks old. Looked like rust preventative, I saw a clean bead of it on the inside of the tailgate.

Oh shit. You know, you're right. Mine did do this. I thought it was tree sap tho, because I took it camping the first week I got it. I just ignored it and pressure washed it every time I cleaned the truck.

here's where the snot comes from, in this case it isn't melted and a bit covered with dust from yesterday's storm. It gets hot and drips out of here onto the step next to the tow wiring panel.

Yep. Same stuff. The person building yours might have just been a little over zealous applying it? Ever look at your seam seal work compared to a Toyota made in Japan? Ive seen a hand smeared print of it on the undercarriage of a 3rd gen, how it ever passed quality inspection is beyond me. Crawl under a 4runner/ Land Cruiser the seam seal work looks pretty damn perfect. Granted I'm talking about seam seal and not oil based rust preventative.

The brownish stuff is a bonding foam used to glue the frame to the outside skin. If you have a clearish material dripping out its the grease that's all over the tailgate lock and rod assembly. I found this out when I installed the electric tailgate pop and lock this past weekend. The grease gun operator must have given yours a little extra :rain:
