Is it ok to hit the redline?

I'm not trying to convince you of anything man. I too paid 45k for my truck and would not do anything to risk causing damage to the engine.

You may not be a fan of getting your RPM's up that high, great, that's awesome, HOWEVER that doesn't change the fact that your engine and ECU were designed to never be able to rev up to anywhere near a point where you could cause damage to your engine's internal components. That's a FACT that remains true no matter how you want to treat your truck, or how I treat mine, or John Doe treats his. If you notice when you floor the gas from a stop and let your truck rev up through first gear all the way, it will never even reach that redline area. Once again it is limited by the ECU on the CONSERVATIVE side. I'm not trying to upset you, this is just basic engine theory on top of modern practices by car makers to save their own asses from lawsuits.

Really, your argument is on par with saying "You shouldn't run your wipers at full speed, it could cause wiper motor damage."

 

What do you think the rev limiter is for? It keeps it from going too high. You're fine. Now if this was 1970, you would not be fine. Only limiter was your brain and right foot.

 

When I step on it, it always shift & never hits redline.. sure it gets close but it’ll never happen.

 

yo theres not a REDLINE indicator for my wiper blades, but if there was one I wouldn't venture into that area cause we all know that it means something could burn up and break, Duh!

I bring every v6 toyota I've owned to redline, atleast daily. Never had 1 engine problem.

That red E on your gas tank gauge? Yeah it means your gas tank blows up when you get to it. NEVER go below 1/4 tank just in case. This is a $45k truck!!!!

 

I guess at my age I've worn out my "need for speed" syndrome. In over a year and a half I've never come close to the red. I drove tractor-trailers for most of my life and got used to being slow and lumbering. You can merge/lane change on freeways with good timing and planning ahead. It's not only better on your engine. It's safer as well.

 

OP said it shifts at 6k which is where redline starts. I doubt he ever gets to 6k+ either.

You won't hurt these trucks by revving them out, the ECU is tuned to prevent damage.

 

This. You have two things going for you OP...

1. The truck is engineered, as an automatic, to automatically shift before you reach redline.
2. The truck's computer will shut off fuel to the engine if you hit red line, preventing it from over-revving.
3. Running your motor at 4,000, 5,000, even 6,000 for a few seconds to pass someone on the highway is not harmful at all. These engines are run at redline for days on end in development to ensure they can withstand the wear and tear.

This is in stark difference to other scenarios...

1. Older cars (before the age of computers controlling) could absolutely over-rev and cause damage.
2. Stick shift cars, before computers controlling max RPM, could over-rev and cause damage.
3. Any vehicle, old to new, that is a stick shift, can be downshifted to cause an over rev condition. This is referred to as the "money shift". It will grenade your engine. In the S2000 world, lots of amateurs wanting to downshift on the highway would try to downshift from 6th to 3rd, and accidentally put it into 1st. Boom.

Based on this, feel free to run to redline here and there. Your covered by what we engineers built in to protect you.

 

I'm tuned, and I just tromped on it from a stop yesterday, got up to 6000rpm in second(redline) and it abruptly changed to third and dropped 2000ish rpm.

Even tuned it's hard to hit the the redline and stay there.

But for those idiots commenting on a V6 they don't own (all you 4.0l owners), this is a LEXUS engine. Designed to rev high. It doesn't even make good power till 3500rpm. The torque curve is shit.

So yeah, no wonder you don't redline your trucks. It's easy not to, when you stomp on it and it only goes down one gear, and pulls you where you need to go.

Even before I was tuned, if I was going 60 behind someone and needed to do 75 to pass them and stomped on it, it would drop two gears and redline to get there because this engine CANNOT fight the wind drag at 60+mph. Not enough torque.

The short of it is, if your driving a manual or in "s-mode" and redlining all the fucking time, it's dumb, don't do that. But if I have to stomp on it in THIS Tacoma and redline it, I wouldn't worry about it, just don't do it every day, you'll be fine.

 

Perfectly fine to redline, most people don’t need to unless you’re racing, hardly anyone on here’s doing that because they have gigantic tires and lifts and driving the street.

this is exact same principle as redlining your truck, if you drive constantly with the gas needle on E or less than you have a greater chance of burning out your fuel pump so why risk it, if you constantly are driving with your Tacometer needle in the REDLINE area you have a greater chance of blowing your seals or engine so why risk it? you've just made my case Duh!

 

revving them out, and revving them out into a constant stage of redlining the tac are 2 different things, when you rev them into the redline area then your into the danger zone, hence the term redline=danger, plus its not necessary to do it on public roads, only racetracks where they redline and are consistently blowing engines and transmissions.

These engines are also in other Toyotas and Lexuses. In those vehicles the redline is higher, 6800 rpm I believe. In the Tacomas the redline is 6000 rpm. You are fine if you take you engine to redline.
