I second or third the idea of 255/85r16 or 255/80r17s. I run Km2s in a 255. I am completely happy with them. They weigh less then most 285s and are sometimes equal in weight to 265/75r16s. I have not had to do any CMC/chopping of a perfectly good new truck frame. I have JBA high caster control arms thoughts at 3 degrees. Yes, they do look narrower. No, I don’t care that they look narrow. They really do grow on you. I have not tried the ST Maxx from cooper but lots and lots of praises about them in this size.

For 3" lift I think 265s would look a little goofy. If you have a really aggressive tire it wouldn't be too bad though.

Yeah, see there is a lot of components to a strawman arguement here. Not really any data to prove for or against either of our arguements, so I’ll leave it here.

Why do trophy trucks and sand rails use wide tires?
Why do king of the hammer rigs use wide tires?
Why do high horsepower street/track cars use wide tires? If it increases acceleration supposedly with a narrow tire?
Why do drag cars use wide tires?
You ever see serious rock crawler rigs on 255s?

Sure, you’ll see huge mud rigs with tractor tires, but those also aren’t 10 inches wide.

Sure I get the limited use case of a skinny tire. Most here have a boner for them because they don’t have to lift to get them to fit. But other than that, the very very slight advantage of a skinny tire is highly outweighed by the disadvantages. The only off-roaders who say skinnies are the way to go are the bro-verlanders.

Feel free to publish your own white paper to dispute other than lumping it into a catch all phrase of a strawman argument.

Wide tires need high horsepower to overcome the increase in rolling resistance.

People that plow parking lots run skinny tires for traction in the snow.

Doesnt matter what you and I think anyway, if the OP wants to hack up their truck, degrade gas mileage and look cool on Instagram, TW or whatever, 285 is the way to go.

A white paper is just that, a white paper to advocate their position on something. It in no way is a hypothesis with data to support it.

Might want to check your definition of a white paper, it's a documented hypothesis with substantiating evidence, many times including scientific data and provable results.

Whatever though dude, you just keep spouting your evidence of rock crawlers and drag cars, easily the apples to apples comparison for the OPs truck.

It’s a persuasive report and nothing more. There was no substantiative evidence, other than some scientific ideologies that could be easily disproven or manipulated to show favorable results.

there is still no published data to prove either of our points; so I think I may not be the only one “spouting”. Using one white paper as the Bible is ignorant in itself.

There's a reason duelies and semis run two sets of skinny tires instead of a set of fat tires on the rear axel.

    Traction.

    I have 265/75/16 tires and a 3” lift. I’m happy with them.

    Wrong

    Weight and stability, not traction.

A lot of people end up with 2.5 of lift with this setup but I guess I’m one of the lucky ones that got 3 full inches out of it after it’s settled.

I work at a tire shop, and can tell you that larger tires of the same number of plies have lower weight and pressure ratings.
